Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department awards 16 scholarships to Miami-Dade County College Students

Low-income College Students From 16 Miami-Dade County Target Areas Receive Financial Support To Help Offset Costs For Their Education

MIAMI ( September 29, 2021 )

Low-income students striving to pay for college applied and will receive financial help from The Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department's (CAHSD) Community Advisory Committees (CACs). Sixteen scholarships in the amount of $2,500 wil be awarded during a virtual ceremony at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021. "I'm committed to providing our future leaders with support they need to thrive, and CAC Scholarships are an important tool to do just that," said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "When we open doors for more young people to pursue higher education, these investments pay dividends for our entire community for years to come."

"CAHSD has supported low-income college students with scholarships for the past 36 years, assisting them to achieve their educational goals," said Sonia J. Grice, CAHSD's Director. Scholarship recipients are between the ages of 16-25, enrolled in a college or vocational institution or currently attending a college or vocational institution with a minimum average 2.0 GPA. They reside within the boundaries of the 16 target areas represented by a CAC. Target areas include: Allapattah, Brownsville, Coconut Grove, Culmer, Edison/Little River, Florida City, Goulds, Hialeah, Liberty City, Little Havanna, Naranja, Opa-locka, Perrine, South Beach, South Miami and Wynwood. Recipients met other requirements such as proof of household income, community service hours, employment history and submission of an essay. The total household income for each student must not exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
