Miami-Dade County hosts series of free TPS clinics for Haitians and Venezuelans
This week Miami-Dade County will start offering free legal clinics to support Haitians and Venezuelans with their applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), thanks to the leadership of the Office of New Americans (ONA) and several community partners and legal volunteers.
The Department of Homeland Security granted TPS to over 150,000 Haitians who were physically present in the United States by May 21, 2021, largely in response to the lasting effects of the 2010 and ongoing instability in Haiti, making it unsafe for people to return.
And over 50,000 Venezuelans in South Florida will benefit for the first time from TPS, after years of advocating for protection due to massive displacement caused by the country’s ongoing political and economic crisis.
“Miami-Dade is home to one of the largest communities of Haitians and Venezuelans in the country and we are proud to support them in their process to apply for or renew protected status, so they can continue living and thriving without fear,” says Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Our county’s history is proof that when immigrants are given an opportunity to belong and contribute, we all benefit.”
The Office of New Americans of Miami-Dade will be hosting free information sessions and legal clinics together with community partners including Catholic Legal Services, American Immigration Lawyers Association of South Florida, Americans for Immigrant Justice, Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), Family Action Network Movement (FANM), HIAS, Hispanic Unity of Florida, Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, and American Bar Association Commission on Immigration.
