Inaugural "Josephine Baker Award" recognizes the artistic talent of local Black dance companies

Provides opportunity for residency at Miami-Dade County Cultural Venues

MIAMI ( October 25, 2021 )

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs are launching the Josephine Baker Award presented to a Black dance company for creative excellence and the development of a groundbreaking body of work. The recipient of the award will have the opportunity for a residency in one of the art centers managed by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, including the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center and the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.

The award, named after Josephine Baker, the international Jazz Age and French American icon who disrupted conventions and broke down boundaries in America and Europe, is being launched as part of the Tribute to Josephine Baker celebration hosted by the Consulate General of France in Miami. Baker is now recognized as a symbol for the fight for equality and will be the recognized at a major public celebration on November 28 at the National Hotel in Miami Beach. In addition to the award, the annual dance education program offered by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center proudly includes a segment on the important contributions of Josephine Baker. In light of their appreciation for her work, two of the Center’s talented instructors, Eulyce Eason and Faren Humes, have been invited to the Josephine Baker celebration.
