Miami-Dade Parks celebrates beginning construction for new splash pad at Lake Stevens Park

MIAMI ( January 25, 2022 )

On Tuesday morning, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners Vice Chairman and District 1 Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert III, and Miami-Dade County Parks Director Maria I. Nardi gathered at Lake Stevens Park (18350 NW 52 Ave., Miami Gardens) to officially break ground on a new splash pad project for the park.  The construction of a new splashpad, walkways, and landscaping improvements will help bring children and families in the nearby neighborhoods together in fun and engaging ways that promote a healthy and active lifestyle and foster a greater love of the outdoors.

The 12-acre Lake Stevens Park also has bike trails, a children’s playground, a fitness zone, and a picnic shelter.

The park improvement project will include a 1,885 square foot splash pad with exterior shower and associated water play structure, a 1,562 square foot restroom building, complete with a breezeway, storage room, custodial room, family restroom, and pump equipment room; lighted walkways; a 25-space parking lot, equipped with three electric vehicle charging stations; a picnic shelter, a multipurpose sodded mound, picnic tables and benches, recycling receptacles, a bike rack, a bottle filler/drinking fountain, and irrigated landscaping.

The new park development will cost approximately $4 million. Funding will be provided by the Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond Program (BBC-GOB) and the Countywide Infrastructure Investment Program (CIIP).

“We continue delivering on the promise of investing in our neighborhoods to foster safe and healthy communities,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I am very excited for the improvements we plan to bring to this park as they will greatly benefit all families in the area. Our children deserve access to healthy, fun spaces and we will be able to provide them with this project.”

“We are excited to have new splash pads at Lake Stevens Park,” said Vice Chairman Gilbert. “Splash pads have become an increasingly popular park and recreation amenity.  An amenity like this will encourage residents and their children to spend more time outdoors with family and friends and create more memorable park experiences.”

Director Nardi said, “We are proud to break ground on these planned improvements at Lake Stevens Park that enhance children’s access to safe, family-friendly recreational experiences in a beautiful park. This is part of the implementation of the Parks and Open Space Masterplan: a community-inspired vision to create a seamless, sustainable system of parks, recreation and open spaces for this and future generations.”
