Miami-Dade Transit ambassadors give passengers a helping hand

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
You’ve heard of UN ambassadors. How about ambassadors for transit? Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) customers are getting a little extra help from a group of County employees who have agreed to serve as “ambassadors” for the department.

MDT has trained about 30 Miami-Dade County employees, all from departments other than Transit, to provide assistance to passengers during their daily commutes. Since March 2008, Transit Ambassadors – with identification badges asking riders “How Can I Help You?” – have been offering route and schedule information, answering passenger questions and taking comments and concerns. Ambassadors receive free monthly transit passes and Metrorail parking permits in exchange for their participation.

“I love talking to people and helping passengers,” said Transit Ambassador Becky Farinas, an executive secretary with the Building Code Compliance Office.

Transit Ambassadors also are an extra set of eyes and ears on the system to help the department spot any service issues or problems that may require the attention of staff.

“We have so many County employees who take the bus or train every day, so it made sense to ask some of them to help us provide extra assistance to passengers and add another dimension to our customer service,” MDT Director Harpal Kapoor said.
