Media invited to Miami-Dade Transit biodiesel testing

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
As part of Miami-Dade County’s efforts to fight global warming, Miami-Dade Transit (MDT), in conjunction with West Virginia University, is testing the use of different types of biodiesel fuels in its buses.

The media is invited to view the testing on Thursday, April 17 at 10 a.m. in the bus parking area in front of the support services garage at the Sheila Winitzer Central Administration Building, 3300 NW 32nd Ave. Technicians will be testing a bus on a dynamometer.

The use of biodiesel or biodiesel blends reduces greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming by decreasing the use of fossil fuels.

MDT plans to begin using a blend of biodiesel and petroleum-based diesel in its buses late this year. In order to ensure no negative impact on service, MDT will begin with a 5 percent biodiesel blend and gradually increase the percentage of biodiesel to 20 percent sometime in 2009. Switching to a 20 percent biodiesel blend will reduce MDT’s use of fossil fuels by about 2.4 million gallons per year.

“As we approach Earth Day, this is a perfect example of MDT’s commitment to help reduce global warming,” MDT Director Harpal Kapoor said.
