Metromover passengers got a dose of classical music along with their ride this week as Miami-Dade Transit, in cooperation with the Miami-Dade County Community Image Board, ushered in the County’s new “Music on the Go” program with a live performance at the Bayfront Park Metromover station.
The Florida International University brass quartet performed a free concert May 1 featuring a selection of chamber music spanning from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
The County is partnering with FIU’s School of Music and other local music schools to bring live musical performances to select Metromover and Metrorail stations at various times throughout the year.
“The MDT Concert Series is an exciting initiative that will enhance passengers’ enjoyment while giving local young musicians another venue to display their talent,” said Miami-Dade Transit Director Harpal Kapoor.
FIU trumpet and brass professor Jim Hacker directed FIU students Cristian Escobar, Michael InoFuentes, Bryan Munera and Ramces Marilli in this week’s inaugural performance.
“This partnership is an opportunity for students to perform and to bring some recognition to the university as well,” Hacker said.
FIU musicians have been honored with invitations to perform at top state and national conferences over the last several years.
