Commissioner Sosa is elected Chair of the Board of County Commissioners

In a historic move, the Board of County Commissioners appointed Commissioner Rebeca Sosa to be their new Chairwoman, making her the first Hispanic woman in Miami-Dade County to be chosen to this prestigious post, as well as the first woman to be elected on the first round.  The decision took place during a November 20, 2012 commission meeting where Commissioner Lynda Bell was also elected as Vice-Chairwoman. An Induction Ceremony will take place in January of 2013 where Commissioner Sosa and Commissioner Bell will commence their two-year term.

Commissioner Sosa joins Election Advisory Group

In light of the difficulties that voters experienced in this election, Commissioner Sosa has accepted Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez's invitation to join the Advisory Group created to identify improvements for Miami-Dade County's elections process. Our residents right to vote should be respected.

Legislation and resolutions sponsored by Commissioner Sosa
  • Miami-Dade County’s water and sewer infrastructure is deteriorated and vulnerable to failure and it is in its best interest to accelerate the repair and replacement of the necessary improvements. Therefore, Commissioner Sosa sponsored a resolution urging the Mayor to identify additional sources of available funds to fund a portion of these improvements in order to not solely rely on our resident's pockets.  File# 122286 


  • Concerned with human trafficking as a form of modern day slavery forcing victims to work against their will, Commissioner Sosa sponsored a resolution urging Congress to pass legislation that would reauthorize and strengthen the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.  File# 122137 
  • Miami International Airport is the County’s principal economic engine serving cargo companies and millions of visitors each year. As the federal government continues to increase inspections and security, the airport will need additional sufficient staff to continue serving visitors and clients. In order to remain as a world leading international airport, Commissioner Sosa sponsored a resolution urging the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security to provide more U.S. Customs & Border Protection staffing at Miami International Airport.  File# 122145 
Dade Medical College

Commissioner Sosa visited Dade Medical College's main campus located in District 6 to present a proclamation for 'Dade Medical College Day.' Since 1999, Dade Medical College has strived to offer students the best educational experience in Nursing, Radiology, Sonography (Ultrasound), Cardiac Sonography, Medical Assistant, Massage Therapy, and Medical Billing and Coding.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station #40

Commissioner Sosa invited officials from the City of West Miami and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to celebrate the grand opening of Fire Station #40 in West Miami. The two-story 4,658 square-foot building is the first green fire station in Miami-Dade which conserves energy and water and reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Commissioner Sosa's efforts made this opening possible.

PortMiami: Cruise Capital of the World Day

Commissioner Sosa presented a Proclamation declaring “PortMiami: Cruise Capital of the World Day.” PortMiami and the cruise industry have grown and prospered for more than 40 years with more than a dozen of the world’s most distinguished cruise brands sailing from our Port.

District 6 Turkey Drive

Commissioner Sosa hosted the annual District 6 Turkey Drive distributing approximately 700 turkeys to residents, local charities and families of needy students in our schools.

BCC Installation Ceremony

Commissioner Sosa attended the Installation Ceremony of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center where she proudly sang the national anthem.
