Sponsored Legislation
  • The State Board of education is requiring the FCAT scores of English Language Learners (ELL) and students with disabilities to be counted before these students have achieved certain basic competencies.  In order to prevent this from happening and to level the playing field, Commissioner Sosa sponsored a resolution urging the State Board of Education to adopt the recommendations of the Education Commissioner’s Task Force. #121303
  • With the safety of all residents in mind, Commissioner Sosa is urging the Florida Legislature to sponsor legislation that requires Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) and Residential Homes located in residential areas to monitor and increase security if they have residents with substance abuse disorders or severe mental illnesses. #120908
  • During these difficult economic times, saving money is key. When Citizens Property Insurance proposed a rate increase of more than the 10 percent allowable by the State Legislature, Commissioner Sosa co-sponsored a resolution opposing this. #121186
  • Commissioner Sosa co-sponsored a resolution to identify County resources that can be used to create safe houses for children who have been sexually exploited. #120826
  • Access to water and sewer service is a fundamental right of residents. Commissioner Sosa co-sponsored an ordinance that creates a bridge account for tenants preventing services from being disconnected when the property owner does not pay these utilities.  #121369
  • Commissioner Sosa co-sponsored a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to reinstate a universal motorcycle helmet law.  Research has shown that when a state repeals its helmet law or opts for less restrictive requirements, helmet use decreases and motorcycle-related deaths, injuries, and costs increase. #121294
  • Commissioner Sosa co-sponsored an ordinance requiring criminal background checks of potential tenants who would like to lease County-owned property to run facilities that provide programs and services to children and/or developmentally disabled individuals. #120899
Elder Abuse Awareness Day
All seniors deserve to live in a healthy and safe environment. Commissioner Sosa presented her proclamation of Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 19 to the members of the Alliance for Aging and the Guardianship Program of Miami. We must expose elder abuse wherever we find it and take action to bring it to an end.
Banah Sweet Way in Hialeah
Commissioner Sosa participated in the street naming ceremony in honor of Banah Sugar at the company's new headquarters in Hialeah. Banah will be creating a minimum of 300 jobs that will greatly benefit residents and contribute to the economic growth and development of Hialeah and Miami-Dade County.
Miami Children's Hospital Camp UOTS
Commissioner Sosa met with children attending Camp UOTS (United Order True Sisters), a week-long sleepover camp for children receiving cancer treatment at Miami Children's Hospital. Every year, Commissioner Sosa helps sponsor this camp taking place at A.D. Barnes Park.
Guayabera Lady Day
Commissioner Sosa presented her proclamation of Guayabera Lady Day on July 19 to Ms. Berta Bravo, who is dedicated to preserving the cultural tradition of this iconic piece of clothing celebrating Cuban culture. Ms. Bravo makes the guayabera a piece of wearable art with a unique twist.

Badia Senior Center
Commissioner Sosa joined Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and City of Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez in visiting seniors at the Badia Senior Center.
New Federal Transit Safety Authority
Commissioner Sosa attended a ceremony highlighting the new federal transit safety authority and presentation of $10 million grant to Miami-Dade Transit as part of the Federal Transit Administration's State of Good Repair Program.
A.D. Barnes Park unveils Sense of Wonder Nature Center
Commissioner Sosa attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Sense of Wonder Nature Center at A.D. Barnes Park. This new facility will allow residents of all ages, as well as scouts and school groups, to enjoy and benefit from year-round nature based classes and workshops.
New Metrorail Station at Miami International Airport
Commissioner Sosa attended the grand opening of the new Miami International Airport Metrorail station and the launching of the Metrorail Orange Line, which will provide passenger rail service to the airport.
Celebration at PortMiami!
Commissioner Sosa attended the breakout celebration of the first of two Tunnel Boring Machines at Port Miami. Commissioner Sosa chairs the Economic Development and Social Services Committee, which includes PortMiami within its jurisdiction.
HanesBrands at PortMiami
Commissioner Sosa joined executives from PortMiami, Seaboard Marine and the World Trade Center Miami in a special ceremony to recognize HanesBrands whose business is helping PortMiami thrive.
Miami-Dade TV
Commissioner Rebeca Sosa and Seaport Deputy Director Juan Kuryla visited Miami-Dade to bring residents up to date with the latest developments at Port Miami. The segment is available in both English and Spanish.
American Cancer Society
Commissioner Sosa attended the kick-off breakfast for the American Cancer Society's campaign Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at the American Airlines Arena. Please visit the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer website, to learn more about this campaign.
Free Back to School Vaccination Drive
Commissioner Sosa hosted her annual back to school vaccination drive at the Miami Springs Recreation Center.
