Miami-Dade County Parks and Miami-Dade County District 2 Commissioner Jean Monestime to Host Seniors Program Kick-Off at Gwen Cherry Park on September 17 at 10 a.m.


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 
The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and Miami-Dade County District 2 Commissioner Jean Monestime, together with partners Urban Strategies, Jesse Trice Community Health Center, and the Gwen Cherry Park Foundation invite residents age 55 and older to join them at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012 as they host the "Energetic and Engaged" Seniors Program kick-off celebration at Gwen Cherry Park, 7090 NW 22 Ave., Miami.  The event is free and will include raffles, refreshments, blood pressure and glucose checks, fitness instruction, arts and crafts, table games, computer access and more.

"It's a great opportunity for area seniors to have fun, mingle and experience some of the park's new recreational programs designed to help seniors become more active and fit," said Commissioner Monestime.

Named after Gwendolyn Cherry, the first African-American woman elected to the Florida Legislature, the 38.5-acre Gwen Cherry Park has a recreational pool, a splash island; tennis and basketball courts; fields for softball, baseball and football; a track; a concession building; stadium bleachers; and sports lighting throughout the facilities. The park is also the home of the National Football League (NFL) Youth Educational Town (Y.E.T.) Center, where children can register for sports programs and after-school activities.
