Miami-Dade County Commission for Women celebrates the unveiling of the Amelia Earhart Historical Marker

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women, under the Office of Community Advocacy, will join the GFWC Woman’s Club of Hialeah and City of Hialeah elected officials for the unveiling of the Amelia Earhart Historical Marker. For the past two years, the Commission for Women has been collaborating on the efforts to install a Florida historical marker for Amelia Earhart in front of the Hialeah Police Department Headquarters. The unveiling will take place at 10:30 a.m., on Jan. 21, at 5555 East 8th Avenue, Hialeah, FL.

The Hialeah Police Department Headquarters is on the site of the old Miami Municipal Airport, from where Amelia Earhart took off on June 1, 1937, on her final flight. She disappeared a few weeks later over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937.

The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women was created in 1971 as an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners, the County administration and the public at large about issues pertaining to the status of women. The Commission for Women advocates for women in the community and strives to improve their quality of life.
