REPORT:
Commissioner Higgins noted that during the April 19, 2022 Joint BCC and Youth Commission Meeting, the Youth Commission recommended implementing park zones on roads adjacent to or in close proximity to certain parks in Miami-Dade County in an effort to control the speed of vehicles in the parks� vicinity. She added that the Youth Commission reported that other communities had implemented park zones, which increased the safety of residents visiting the parks. She explained that the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department would design a pilot program to examine five County parks that had higher traffic incidents and methods to market park zones.
District 6 Miami-Dade County Youth Commission Chairwoman Sylvia Rodriguez spoke about the goals and vision of the Youth Commission. She noted the Youth Commission took part in initiatives that addressed issues affecting youth such as poverty, literacy, civic engagement and gun violence. These initiatives included a collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department (JSD) for a toy drive in December 2022, and other collaborative efforts with organizations, such as Girl Power, Inc.
Chairwoman Rodriguez mentioned that in June 2023 the Youth Commission will take a legislative tour in Washington, D.C. and meet with congressional representatives from the County.
Melanie Ullona, Secretary/Vice Chairperson of the Education and Services Committee, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (District 13) mentioned several initiatives that the Youth Commission participated in which addressed youth-related issues.

REPORT:
Maurits Acosta, Interim Committee Chairman, Advocacy and Legislation Committee (ALC), Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (District 13), spoke about a partnership between the Youth Commission and the Together for Children Youth Summit to host workshops that would be focused on civic engagement.
Chairman Acosta mentioned that he introduced an Agenda Item in the ALC to create an award for County middle and high school students who made contributions to their community.
Maya Gowda, Education and Services Committee Chairwoman, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (Office of the Mayor), spoke about a collaboration between the Youth Commission and the Hygiene Project to organize a presentation on period poverty.
Jasmine Williams, Community Action and Cultural Engagement Case Committee Chairwoman, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (District 3), detailed the Youth Commission�s efforts with the Books for Tots program to distribute age-appropriate books to Head Start programs throughout the County.

Isabel del Valle McGuinness, Youth Commissioner, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (District 7) detailed the Youth Commission�s participation in the FIU Ropes Course program on March 11, 2023.
Rania Ishoof, Youth Commission Experience, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission, (District 7), described the positive impact the members of the Youth Commission had in the County and their strong level of commitment to serve the community.

REPORT:
Brian Rodriguez, Parliamentarian, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (District 11), congratulated several Youth Commissioners for their Miami Silver Knight Award nominations.
Sylvia Rodriguez, Chairwoman, Miami-Dade County Youth Commission (District 6), concluded the presentations.
Commissioners Cohen Higgins and Regalado, and Vice Chairman Rodriguez commended the Youth Commission members on their presentations.
Vice Chairman Rodriguez also commended the Youth Commission and acknowledged Ms. Sofia Quintana, who was appointed by him to the Youth Commission for District 10.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava commended the Youth Commission and Education and Services Committee Chairwoman Maya Gowda, who was appointed by her to the Youth Commission. She pointed out that Chairwoman Gowda advocated for an Agenda Item on the April 18, 2023 Board of County Commissioners meeting (See Agenda Item 11A1, Legislative File No. 230575).
Mayor Levine Cava noted that she was in support of the Youth Commission�s initiatives and asked to work with them in implementing the initiatives.
Senior Deputy Clerk Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts Melissa Adames swore in the attending members of the Youth Commission into office.
