|
TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MAYOR OR COUNTY MAYOR�S DESIGNEE TO COORDINATE WITH THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH TO FACILITATE THE POTENTIAL FUTURE PEDESTRIANIZATION OF OCEAN DRIVE BETWEEN 5TH STREET AND 14TH PLACE AND FURTHER DIRECTING THE COUNTY MAYOR OR COUNTY MAYOR�S DESIGNEE TO EXPEDITIOUSLY REVIEW THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH�S APPLICATION FOR THE REPURPOSING OF TRAFFIC LANES ON OCEAN DRIVE AND, IF SATISFIED AS TO THE COMPLIANCE WITH FLORIDA STATUTES SECTION 334.61, APPROVE SAID APPLICATION AND ISSUE ANY APPLICABLE PERMITS BODY WHEREAS, Ocean Drive in Miami Beach is one of the principle focal points for entertainment and social gathering within Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, Ocean Drive�s historic Art Deco architecture and palm tree lined paths attract guests and visitors from throughout the world; and WHEREAS, the potential future pedestrianization of Ocean Drive between Fifth Street and Fourteenth Place may enhance the safety and quality of life for residents and visitors to that portion of Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, Section 2-95.1 of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Florida provides �the Department [of Transportation and Public Works] shall have exclusive jurisdiction in respect to all matters of traffic engineering within the territorial areas of Miami-Dade County, subject only to the jurisdiction of the state road department in respect to state highways�; and WHEREAS, the closure of portions of Ocean Drive to motorized vehicular traffic may impact ingress and egress onto Collins Avenue (State Road AIA), warranting review from the Florida Department of Transportation; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach has made application for the conversion of lanes on Ocean Drive to accommodate motorized vehicular traffic for Southbound traffic only and inclusion of bicycle and pedestrian lanes; and WHEREAS, Florida Statutes section 334.61 identifies the necessary process to be conducted prior to the repurposing of one or more existing traffic lanes, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Directs the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee to coordinate with the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Miami Beach to facilitate the potential future pedestrianization of Ocean Drive between 5th Street and 14th Place. Section 2. Further Directs the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee to expeditiously review the City of Miami Beach�s application for the repurposing of traffic lanes on Ocean Drive and, if satisfied as to the compliance with Florida Statutes section 334.61, approve said application and issue any applicable permits. |
