TITLE RESOLUTION APPROVING THE CITY OF MIAMI�S CODESIGNATION OF THAT PORTION OF NORTHWEST 14TH AVENUE BETWEEN NORTHWEST 28TH STREET AND NORTHWEST 26TH STREET AS �WILFREDO �WILLY� GORT WAY� BODY WHEREAS, Wilfredo Gort de los Llanos, affectionately known as Willy Gort (�Commissioner Gort�), was born in Havana, Cuba in 1940 and immigrated to Miami as a child, where he devoted his life to public service and civic engagement; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort attended Miami Senior High School and went on to attend Miami-Dade Community College and Florida International University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort served his community as an investment banker for over 25 years before moving into the public sector, beginning with his election as City Commissioner for the City of Miami in 1993; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Gort continued to serve his community over multiple decades, including his service in the City of Miami as Vice Mayor, Acting Mayor, and representative of City of Miami District 1 for multiple terms through November 2019; and WHEREAS, throughout his tenure, Commissioner Gort dedicated himself to advocacy on behalf of seniors, working families, small businesses, and neighborhood preservation and devoted his time to volunteer and leadership roles within numerous civic and nonprofit organizations, including the Little Havana Nutrition and Activity Center, the Youth Co-Op, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana; and WHEREAS, to this day, Commissioner Gort continues to serve his community through his appointment to the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust; and WHEREAS, in honor of Commissioner Gort�s leadership and contributions to the community, the Miami City Commission passed Resolution No. R-26-0168 on April 9, 2026, which codesignated that portion of Northwest 14th Avenue between Northwest 28th Street and Northwest 26th Street as �Wilfredo �Willy� Gort Way�; and WHEREAS, a copy of Resolution No. R-26-0168 is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami would like for the County to install signage indicating this codesignation on County street signs and traffic signal mast arms; and WHEREAS, this Board would also like to honor Commissioner Gort by approving the City of Miami�s codesignation of that portion of Northwest 14th Avenue between Northwest 28th Street and Northwest 26th Street as �Wilfredo �Willy� Gort Way�; and WHEREAS, that portion of Northwest 14th Avenue between Northwest 28th Street and Northwest 26th Street is a city road located in the City of Miami; and WHEREAS, this codesignation is in County Commission District 3, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Approves the City of Miami�s codesignation of that portion of Northwest 14th Avenue between Northwest 28th Street and Northwest 26th Street as �Wilfredo �Willy� Gort Way�. Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this resolution to the Mayor, City Commission, City Manager and City Clerk of the City of Miami, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Development Services Division of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the City of Miami Police Department, and the City of Miami Fire Rescue Department. |
