TITLE
RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING THAT PORTION OF SW 103RD AVENUE FROM SW 132ND STREET TO SW 134TH STREET AS �CAPTAIN GUSTAVO �GUS� DUARTE WAY�

BODY
WHEREAS, on February 9, 2021, Captain Gustavo �Gus� Duarte of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) unexpectedly passed away at the age of 60; and
WHEREAS, born August 28, 1960, Duarte attended Coral Park Senior High School and Miami-Dade College before receiving his bachelor�s degree from Florida International University along with his master�s degree in criminal justice from Nova Southeastern University; and
WHEREAS, prior to joining MDPD in 1985, Duarte served in the U.S. Coast Guard; and
WHEREAS, his first assignment at MDPD was to the Kendall District, where he served as a Police Officer, Police Corporal, Police Sergeant, and Master Sergeant; and
WHEREAS, upon being promoted to Lieutenant in 2003, Duarte served in the Central Records Bureau and Special Patrol Bureau, before being promoted again to First Lieutenant of the Kendall District; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, Duarte was promoted to Police Captain, a position in which his assignments included the Communications Bureau, Strategic Planning and Development Section, Crime Scene Investigative Support Section, and his final assignment, the Airport District; and
WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career, Captain Duarte was a strong proponent and volunteer for the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony, held the first Thursday of every May in Tropical Park; and
WHEREAS, since the ceremony�s inception, Captain Duarte�s dedication has ensured the memories of our fallen officers are kept alive in our minds and hearts; and
WHEREAS, Captain Duarte will be remembered as a loving father, husband, public servant, mentor, and friend; and
WHEREAS, he was deeply respected both personally and professionally, and as a �cop�s cop� he helped pave the way for future law enforcement officers; and
WHEREAS, Captain Duarte is survived by his loving wife Aimee, his children Gustavo and Jessica Lynn, his mother Elvira, his sister Tanya, and his brother Alex; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory and service of Captain Duarte by codesignating that portion of SW 103rd Avenue from SW 132nd Street to SW 134th Street as �Captain Gustavo �Gus� Duarte Way�; and
WHEREAS, that portion of SW 103rd Avenue from SW 132nd Street to SW 134th Street is a County-maintained road located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 8,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, codesignates that portion of SW 103rd Avenue from SW 132nd Street to SW 134th Street as �Captain Gustavo �Gus� Duarte Way�.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Development Services Division of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
