Deering Estate presents Every Being is an Island, a solo exhibition by Amalia Caputo

MIAMI ( May 25, 2021 )

The Deering Estate presents Every Being is an Island, a solo exhibition by Amalia Caputo that deals with the intangible, and often ambiguous, relationship with memory. This most recent body of work from the titular series places Caputo's experience as an artist-in-residence on display. Through a combined study on the micro and macro environments at Deering Estate, visitors are offered the opportunity to enter the artist's lens-based practice through her archive. The exhibition opens to the public on June 18th and runs through August 31, 2021. Artist talks and specialty curator tours will take place through the run of the show. The exhibition evening will be held on Friday, June 18th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Deering Estate, and is free with RSVP at Eventbrite.com.

The Deering Estate maintains the legacy of Charles Deering of supporting artists and creative innovation through its vigorous residency and exhibition program. The Deering Estate’s Exhibition Program has always been a platform for artists to explore the site and illustrate different facets of the history of the site and its surroundings.

About Every Being is an Island:
As an invisible agent, time acts on all things and beings leaving an inadvertent effect. How does a home, a wave, a garment, a painting, or tree change from one day to the next beyond what the eye can see? How do we relate permanence to the inherently fleeting nature of the human experience? Comprised of hundreds of images, Every Being is an Island captures this impalpable process on the small, often overlooked, everyday components that build memories, elevating the character of each element observed. This visual archive provides a map of the everchanging surroundings, activating the lively nature of the stillness in our surroundings.

Every Being is an Island, a photographic and video installation, challenges the notion of past, present, and future as it relates to memory. Manufactured spaces placed within the natural sequences of an existing world will live past the humans that constructed them, actively aiming to create a collection of memories through these objects. This paradox and its tangential threads are the basis of this project, as one plays witness to time passed in present day using the Deering Estate as the backdrop to explore this universal behavior.

This project is funded in part by Knight Foundation and Oolite Arts, through The Ellies, Miami's Visual Arts Awards.

About the artists:
Venezuelan-American artist, Amalia Caputo, has created an extensive body of work that lies at the intersection of photography, video, and installation, navigating the function of memory and its place in building the world we perceive. Visual culture creates the point of departure for an optic memory archive, which Caputo uses to study the correspondence between found objects, still photographs, the moving image, and the diverse connections generated when combined. Captivated by themes of culture, as built by society, and placed in the natural world, Caputo reflects on the relationship between these topics by studying their experiential manifestations.
