TITLE
RESOLUTION DECLARING THE FIRST WEEK OF APRIL OF EACH YEAR TO BE ''WATER FOR PEOPLE WEEK'' AND AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY MANAGER TO DESIGNATE COUNTY STAFF IN THE WATER AND SEWER DEPARTMENT TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES RELATING TO ''WATER FOR PEOPLE WEEK''

BODY
WHEREAS, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) is an international nonprofit scientific and educational society which is recognized as the authoritative resource for knowledge and advocacy to improve the quality and supply of water in North America and beyond; and
WHEREAS, the AWWA is the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world with 57,000 members, including many employees of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department; and
WHEREAS, the primary mission of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department is to provide drinking water to people living in and visiting our region; and
WHEREAS, Water For People is a private, nonprofit, international organization which was established by members of the AWWA in 1991, and is concerned about the thousands of people � most of them children � who die every day from water-related diseases; and
WHEREAS, Water For People helps �the most impoverished people worldwide improve their quality of life by supporting locally sustainable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene education programs�; and
WHEREAS, Water for People�s mission mirrors Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department�s mission of bettering our world by, among other things, improving the quality and supply of water; and
WHEREAS, Water For People�s activities not only assist those in developing countries throughout the world but assist water supply professionals and users in communities like Miami-Dade County by, among other things, fostering a better understanding of emerging challenges regarding the provision of sustainable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene; and
WHEREAS, many County employees currently assist Water For People through, among other things, personal donations; and
WHEREAS, this Board finds that it is in the best interest of the citizens of Miami-Dade County to establish "Water for People Week" and to authorize the County Manager to engage in activities which support Water For People,
� NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board declares the first week of April of each year to be "Water For People Week" and authorizes the County Manager to designate County staff in the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department to engage in activities, in coordination with the Florida section of the AWWA, relating to "Water For People Week" including, but not limited to, outreach, educational programs and fundraising.
