REPORT: | Assistant County Attorney Benitez read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. It was moved by Commissioner Sosa that this proposed resolution be forwarded with a favorable recommendation. This motion was seconded by Commissioner Diaz. Commissioner Sosa noted this proposed resolution would declare June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and urged all citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicion of physical, emotional, or financial abuse against the elderly throughout the year. Commissioners Diaz, Sorenson, Souto, and Vice-Chairman Gimenez asked that they be listed as co-sponsors. Hearing no other questions or comments, the Committee proceeded to vote. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF JUNE AS ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH BODY WHEREAS, seniors are valued members of our community and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they live safely and with dignity; and WHEREAS, as our population ages, the number of elderly who become victims of neglect, physical and financial abuse will increase; and WHEREAS, it is estimated that for every one case of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation, or self-neglect reported to authorities, approximately five more go unreported; and WHEREAS, an effective way to combat this problem is to make the citizens of MiamiDade County aware of the various types of elder abuse, including: physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation; and WHEREAS, part of the solution to elder abuse is to report any suspicion that an older adult is being harmed in some way; and WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County desires to take part in the campaign to raise awareness of the prevalence of elder abuse and the resources available to help the victims of this abuse; and WHEREAS, combating abuse of older people will help improve the quality of life for all seniors and will allow seniors to continue to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, the Board desires to declare the month of June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and to encourage observance of the month with the appropriate exhibitions and informational activities, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board declares the month of June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and urges all citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicion of physical, emotional, or financial elder abuse throughout the year. This Board urges all to encourage the observance of the month with appropriate exhibitions and informational activities on how to help the older adults in our community who are victims of abuse. |
