TITLE
RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE MAYOR TO DIRECT COUNTY DEPARTMENTS TO UTILIZE THE MIAMI TIMES NEWSPAPER TO ADEQUATELY NOTIFY THE COMMUNITY ABOUT GOVERNMENT MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, LEGISLATION AND OPPORTUNITIES

BODY
WHEREAS, The Miami Times has been the most well-know and reliable source of news distribution to the African American community, which constitutes twenty percent of the population of Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, The Miami Times has been operating and distributing news to the African American community for over 84 years; and
WHEREAS, The Miami Times has been heralded by several County resolutions and acknowledgements for its effectiveness in distributing news and notices of governmental actions to the African American community, as well as reporting news about the African American communities; and
WHEREAS, The Miami Times is the longest active African American owned business in Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, usage of The Miami Times is uniquely appropriate and effective to ensure that County meetings, activities, legislation, as well as employment and contractual opportunities are noticed to the African American community; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County seeks to use notice procedures to ensure, as much as practical, that all communities in the County are noticed about governmental meetings, activities, legislation and opportunities that affect all communities; and
WHEREAS, governmental meetings, activities, legislation and opportunities that have particular impacts upon a specific and identifiable community should be noticed by the most effective and appropriately known methods of publicizing such governmental actions,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board requests that the Mayor direct each County department to utilize The Miami Times, in addition to any other required publication, in distributing information that has an impact or is particularly useful to communities known to be served by this paper.
