REPORT:	Pursuant to Commissioner Rolle's request, it was moved by Commissioner Edmonson that the foregoing proposed resolution be adopted as amended to insert "serious, felony" directly in front of the word "crimes" in Section 1. This motion was seconded by Commissioner Moss. Hearing no other questions or comments, the Commission proceeded to vote.

TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO ENACT A LAW THAT WOULD ENHANCE THE PENALTY FOR ANY CRIME THAT IS COMMITTED IN, ON OR AROUND ANY PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT AND/OR PUBLIC HOUSING PROPERTY

BODY
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County, owns and operates many Public Housing properties for the benefit of all residents of Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, residents of Public Housing have on occasion been the victims of crimes a greater number of times than many non residents; and
WHEREAS, the safety of Public Housing residents and employees and visitors is of utmost importance to this County; and
WHEREAS, enhanced penalties for specified crimes is a strong deterrent to the commission of those crimes; and
WHEREAS, deterring crime in and around Public Housing is in the public interest and improves the quality of life for all residents of Miami-Dade County,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the Florida Legislature to pass a law that enhances the penalties for any and all serious, felony crimes that have been committed on or within a specified distance from any Public Housing unit and/or Public Housing property for the protection of residents of Public Housing and any person going onto Public Housing property.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the Senate President, the House Speaker, and the chair and members of the Miami-Dade State Legislative Delegation.
Section 3. Directs the County's state lobbyists to advocate for the issues identified in section 1 above, and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to include this item in the 2007 state legislative package.
