REPORT: Chairman Moss and Commissioners Diaz, Sorenson, Gimenez, Heyman, Barreiro and Rolle asked that they be added as co-sponsors to this resolution. Commissioner Sorenson offered a friendly amendment to have this event commemorated in the month of May, in perpetuity; and Commissioner Seijas accepted the suggested amendment. Hearing no further comments or questions, The foregoing proposed resolution was adopted as amended to provide that the month of May be commemorated as the Cuba and the Cuban-American experience in Miami-Dade County in perpetuity.

TITLE
RESOLUTION DECLARING MAY, 2009 AND EACH MAY THEREAFTER AS MONTH OF COMMEMORATION OF CUBA AND THE CUBAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

BODY

WHEREAS, the history of Cuba and that of the State of Florida have been intertwined; and
WHEREAS, commencing in 1959 more than one million Cubans fled the island of Cuba in the pursuit of freedom to be exiled in the United States; and
WHEREAS, most made Miami-Dade County their permanent home; and
WHEREAS, Cuban-Americans have had a profound influence in every aspect of the culture of South Florida; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is a culturally diverse community comprised of many different races and ethnic groups; and
WHEREAS, the dissemination and promotion of cultural values of the various segments of our community enhances us all; and
WHEREAS, the month of May is of particular historical relevance to the Cuban people since Cuba became an independent republic on May 20, 1902; and
WHEREAS, this Board wishes to recognize the accomplishment of Cuban-Americans, promote and disseminate their achievements, and honor their sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, an exhibit will be displayed in the Stephen P. Clark Center throughout the month of May, 2009,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that that the month of May, 2009 and each May thereafter is hereby declared Month of Commemoration of Cuba and the Cuban-American Experience in Miami-Dade County, and the Mayor or designee is hereby authorized and directed to effectuate the intent of this resolution through all appropriate means for May, 2009 and each May thereafter.
