TITLE
RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF JANUARY AS HAITIAN INDEPENDENCE MONTH IN RECOGNITION OF HAITI AND THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF HAITIAN-AMERICANS

BODY
WHEREAS, on January 1, 1804, the former French colony of Saint-Domingue declared its independence from France, naming the new nation Haiti, honoring one of the indigenous Ta�no names for the island; and
WHEREAS, the nation of Haiti occupies a unique place in world history, as the only nation founded after a successful slave rebellion; and
WHEREAS, Haiti was the second independent nation in the western hemisphere after the U.S., and the first post-colonial independent nation in the world led by people of African descent; and
WHEREAS, Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean behind Cuba and the Dominican Republic; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade county is home to thousands of Haitian-Americans, who add to the vibrant fabric of this community; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to recognize Haiti and honor the contributions Haitian-Americans have made to this community by declaring January, 2010 and each January thereafter as Haitian Independence Month,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board hereby declares the month of January, 2010 and each January thereafter as Haitian Independence Month, and the Mayor or Designee is hereby authorized and directed to effectuate the intent of this resolution through all appropriate means.
