REPORT:
Assistant County Attorney Gerald Sanchez read the foregoing discussion item into the record.
Mr. Keith Dyson, retired Miami-Dade Firefighter and Florida Regional Director/Coordinator for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, appeared before the Committee and spoke in support along with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) for the Pink Heals Tour that will visit South Florida. He stated that the Firefighter Cancer Support Network provided Fire Department employees and their families with an opportunity to receive assistance when dealing with cancer. He informed the Committee that the Guardians of the Ribbon originated in Texas with a group of firefighters, police officers and leaders who raised awareness and money for the fight against cancer for women. Mr. Dyson stated that a tour of pink fire trucks across the State of Florida would begin in Jacksonville, Florida on September 14th and end in Tallahassee, Florida on October 1st.
Ms. Michele Steel, representative for Metro-Dade Fire Fighters, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1403, appeared before the Committee seeking to expedite a resolution for an event scheduled for September 23, 2010, in which four (4) fire trucks across municipalities located in Miami-Dade County would be wrapped in pink. She pointed out that IAFF would incur the cost to wrap a fire truck on behalf of MDFR. She also asked if the Committee members and members of the County Commission could donate discretionary funds for the event.
Chairwoman Heyman asked Assistant County Attorney Gerald Sanchez to prepare a resolution authorizing the donation of a surplus Miami-Dade Fire Rescue truck to the Pink Heals Tour for a “Cares Enough to Wear” event to be held on September 23, 2010, and authorizing the expense incurred for wrapping the truck in pink to be charged to the Metro-Dade Fire Fighters, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 1403.
Commissioners Diaz and Sosa asked to be listed as cosponsors on this resolution.
Commissioner Sosa asked Assistant County Attorney Gerald Sanchez to prepare a resolution encouraging County Government employees to wear pink clothing (i.e. t-shirts, baseball caps or both) during the month of October in honor of breast cancer survivors. She stated she would allocate $1,000 from her District Office Funds for this event.
Commissioner Sosa asked the MDFR Chief Herminio Lorenzo to donate two surplus MDFR trucks for this purpose.
Commissioner Diaz stated he would allocate $1,000 from his District Discretionary Funds for this event.
Chairwoman Heyman acknowledged Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Department Director Kathy Woods-Richardson regarding the dedication of the first pink recycling garbage vehicle.
