TITLE RESOLUTION IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 TERRORIST ATTACKS ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY; URGING MIAMI-DADE COUNTY GOVERNMENT FACILITIES TO OBSERVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE IN HONOR OF THIS ANNIVERSARY; URGING THE PRIVATE SECTOR, THE SCHOOL BOARD AND ALL MUNICIPALITIES TO OBSERVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE BODY WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, terrorists ruthlessly attacked the United States, leading to the deaths and injuries of thousands of innocent U.S. people as well as people from more than 90 different countries and territories; and WHEREAS, in response to the attacks, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, physicians, nurses, military personnel and other first responders immediately and without concern for their own well-being rose to service in a heroic attempt to protect the lives of those people still at risk, saving thousands of lives in doing so; and WHEREAS, in the aftermath of the attacks, thousands of rescue and recovery workers joined first responders to help to search for and recover victims lost in the terrorist attacks; and WHEREAS, in the weeks and months following the attacks, thousands of people volunteered to help the rescue and recovery efforts; and WHEREAS, many first responders, rescue and recovery workers and volunteers, as well as survivors of the September 11 terrorist attacks, continue to suffer from serious medical illnesses and emotional distress related to the physical and mental trauma of the September 11 attacks; and WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of brave men and women continue to serve every day, having answered the call to duty as members of the U.S. Armed Forces, while thousands have given their lives or suffered injury to defend our security and prevent future terrorist attacks; and WHEREAS, the entire nation witnessed and shared in the tragedy of September 11, 2001; and WHEREAS, September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; and WHEREAS, the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks provides an occasion to reflect on these events and the sacrifices related to them, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Urges all Miami-Dade County government facilities to observe one minute of silence on September 11, 2011 in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, with appropriate exceptions for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, firefighters and other County employees where health and safety of the public would be placed at risk. Section 2. Urges the private sector, the Miami-Dade School Board and municipalities in Miami-Dade County to observe such a minute of silence. Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of this resolution to the Chair and Members of the Miami-Dade Public Schools, the Superintendent of the Miami-Dade Public Schools and the Mayor, Chair and Commissioners for each municipality within Miami-Dade County |
