TITLE RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING SW 16TH STREET FROM SW 97TH AVENUE TO SW 107TH AVENUE AS �DR. ANTONIO JORGE WAY� BODY WHEREAS, Dr. Antonio Jorge was born in Cuba where he taught at the University of Havana and served as chief economist for the Cuban National Association of Manufacturers, Chief Economist and Vice Minister of Finance for the Cuban government and president of the Collegiums of Cuban Economists in Cuba from 1960 to 1961; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jorge fled his native country in the early 1960�s and started his long career as a distinguished college professor at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, Merrimack College in Massachusetts, the University of Miami and Florida International University; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jorge authored or edited 20 books and numerous academic articles, essays and monographs, most of them regarding economic issues and trends in Cuba and Latin America, foreign investment and international trade; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jorge was a significant scholar on Cuba and the future of its economy after socialism, and an important voice in the Cuban exile community; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jorge also served as Vice President and Provost at St. Thomas University, Associate Executive Vice President of Florida International University, Senior Research Scholar at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, Senior Academic Advisor and Editor to the Cuba Transition Project at the University of Miami, and Senior Fellow with the North/South Center and the International School Graduate Studies at the University of Miami; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jorge was appointed by the Governor of Florida as founding president of the Commission for the Hispanic Population of the State of Florida and served as a member of the Post-Secondary Education Commission, Vice-Chairman of the Community Action Agency, and Secretary of the Mental Health Board of the State of Florida; and WHEREAS, Dr. Jorge, in addition to his numerous academic accolades, was actively involved in serving and improving the Miami-Dade community through his work as a member of the Long-Range Planning Commission of Miami-Dade County, inaugural Chairman of the Socio-Economic Development Council of Miami-Dade County, a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Way, member of the Board of Organized Migrants in Community Action and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Radio PAZ; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioner saw it fit to honor Dr. Jorge�s invaluable work as Chairman of the Socio-Economic Development Council in developing a short-term and long-term plan to address economic development in Miami-Dade County in the wake of September 11, 2001 by renaming the Council as the Dr. Antonio Jorge Social-Economic Development Council upon his retirement for health reasons; and WHEREAS, Dr. Antonio Jorge passed away on February 7, 2012 at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, SW 16th Street from SW 97th Avenue to SW 107th Avenue is a County road located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor Dr. Antonio Jorge�s lifetime accomplishments and his contribution to the Miami-Dade community with this codesignation; and WHEREAS, this proposed co designation is located in County Commission District 10, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, codesignates SW 16th Street from SW 97th Avenue to SW 107thh Avenue as �Dr. Antonio Jorge Way�. Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department and Land Development/Right-of-Way Division of the Public Works and Waste Management Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. |
