TITLE RESOLUTION WAIVING RULE 9.02(A) REQUIRING NAMING OF A COUNTY FACILITY BE CONSIDERED AT A PUBLIC HEARING, AND NAMING THE FEDERAL INSPECTION SERVICES DEPARTURE AREA AT MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AS �THE PETER J. DOLARA WORLD GATEWAY� BODY WHEREAS, Miami International Airport is a critical component of the Miami-Dade County economy, and tourism and international trade are major industries for Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, Peter J. Dolara has played a crucial role in expanding international traffic at Miami International Airport and growing business and tourism in Miami-Dade County, which has benefited innumerable County residents; and WHEREAS, Peter J. Dolara was, from 1989 through 2012, Senior Vice President-Mexico, Caribbean and Latin America for American Airlines; and WHEREAS, under Peter J. Dolara�s leadership, the Miami hub has grown from 200 employees to become the largest international gateway in the American Airline�s network, with more than 9,000 employees and daily nonstop service to virtually every major business and leisure market in Latin America, Mexico and the Caribbean; and WHEREAS, Peter J. Dolara has worked tirelessly to raise Miami-Dade�s profile as a business and leisure destination for Caribbean, Latin, and South American travelers, and was instrumental in the development of the �Miami: Where Worlds Meet� marketing program; and WHEREAS, this leadership has resulted in sustained increases in tourism and passengers to Miami-Dade County even in fact of the ongoing recession; and WHEREAS, Peter J. Dolara has been a leader in civic activism, and serves on the Board of the Easter Seals Society of Miami-Dade County and United Way of Miami-Dade; and WHEREAS, Peter. J. Dolara is a full-time resident of Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, Section 2-1, Rule 9.02(a) of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Florida, which requires public hearing prior to naming a County facility, can be waived by two- thirds vote of the Board members present; and WHEREAS, Section 2-1, Rule 9.02(d) of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Florida, states that the Commission may, by a three-fifths vote of Board members present, name a County facility or property after a living individual who has not served as an elected official within the past five years and who �has made a direct, significant lifetime contribution to this community;� and WHEREAS, Section 2-1, Rule 4.01(j)(2), of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Florida, states that the naming of a County facility or property is not subject to the committee requirement, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Finds that Peter J. Dolara has made a direct, significant lifetime contribution to this community. Section 2. By two- thirds vote of the Board members present, this Board waives Rule 9.02(a), to the extent such Rule would require a public hearing. Section 3. Having considered this matter, and by a three-fifths vote of the Board members present, names the departure area of the Federal Inspection Services facility at Miami International Airport as �The Peter J. Dolara World Gateway�. |
