PRESENTATION OF A CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION TO CPL. HANS ANTHONY SCHMID, UNITED STATE MARINES

Commissioner Diaz presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Corporal Hans Anthony Schmid, United States Marines.
Commissioner Suarez asked for a point of personal privilege, and informed his fellow commissioners that newly-elected State Representative Jose Javier Rodriguez was in the chambers and wished to address them.
Representative Jose Javier Rodriguez noted he was recently elected to the Florida House of Representatives, and he wished to introduce himself and inform them that his office would always be open to them. He indicated that he represented District 112 in the House, which includes Districts 5, 6 and 7; a large part of the City of Miami; the Village of Key Biscayne and part of Coral Gables. He said that he grew up in Miami-Dade; after college he served in the Peace Corps as a business advising volunteer; he attended Harvard Law School; after law school, he worked as a Legal Services Attorney for five years and then went into private practice in Miami. He stated that he was looking forward to working with the Commission members on important issues, including improving the quality of education, ensuring that families have access to quality healthcare, economic development, and the business climate.
Commissioner Bell asked for a point of personal privilege and said that she wanted to let the community know that the County saved $158 million when the Airport refinanced its bonds. As the Airport did not cash any portion of this amount, the savings would be passed along to the airport’s customers in the form of lower debt service costs, noted the commissioner.
Commissioner Moss asked whether the Commission members could adopt a special resolution to express their sorrow and solidarity with the community of Newtown as they grieved for the loss of their children.
County Attorney Robert Cuevas indicated that his office could prepare a resolution expressing the Commission members’ sympathy to the Newtown community; and this resolution could be added to today’s (12/18) agenda.
Commissioner Diaz asked for a point of personal privilege and said that he would like to congratulate the Miami-Dade Police Department for its outstanding work to ensure that a former member of the military who had barricaded himself surrendered without incident.
