Commissioner Levine Cava introduced Ms. Naomi Ross to present information on the upcoming Jane’s Walk event, noting this was a citizen led walking tour bringing neighbors together and inspired by urbanist, Jane Jacobs.
Ms. Naomi Ross, 2341 SW 19 Street, Miami, described the Jane’s Walk Miami to be held May 5-7, 2017. She described Jane’s Walk as a global movement of free, citizen-led walking tours designed to encourage people to explore their cities and connect with their neighbors. Ms. Ross stated that over 1,500 pedestrians lost their lives on South Florida roads, noting issues related to both bad road design as well as bad drivers.
Ms. Ross commented that Jane’s Walk was an annual festival that began in 2007 with over 1,000 walks last year in 212 cities around the world. She said the Walks were designed to connect people, to convene conversation, to become engaged members of their communities and to foster civic leadership. Ms. Ross asked the County Commission to promote the Walk in their community, to get involved in the Walk, and to use the Walk to engage in a variety of community based conversation topics. She announced the kick-off event on April 24, 2017.
Commissioner Levine Cava announced that she planned to hold a community walk in District 8 and encouraged her colleagues to do the same. |
