TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MAYOR OR COUNTY MAYOR�S DESIGNEE TO PREPARE A PLAN TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF GUN BUY BACK EVENTS CONDUCTED ON AN ANNUAL BASIS BY THE MIAMI-DADE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND TO PROVIDE A REPORT TO THE BOARD WITHIN A SPECIFIED TIME BODY WHEREAS, gun violence is affecting communities across the country, including Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, gun violence has resulted in numerous shootings across Miami-Dade County in recent years; and WHEREAS, this Board desires to address and reduce gun violence in Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, gun buy back events provide an opportunity for individuals to turn in guns anonymously, with no questions asked; and WHEREAS, gun buy back events provide that individuals who turn in firearms may be eligible for gift cards or other rewards in exchange for those firearms; and WHEREAS, gun buy back events can be an effective tool for reducing unnecessary or unwanted guns in the community; and WHEREAS, gun buy back events are even more effective when they are held in conjunction with municipal, state, federal, and private sector partners, as those partners can identify and contribute additional resources to support gun buy back events; and WHEREAS, removing unnecessary or unwanted guns from the community reduces gun violence and fosters safer communities; and WHEREAS, this Board wishes to increase the number of gun buy back events conducted on an annual basis by the Miami-Dade Police Department, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee is directed to prepare a plan to increase the number of gun buy back events conducted on an annual basis by the Miami-Dade Police Department. This plan shall, at a minimum: (1) identify the number of gun buy back events conducted in the last three years by the Miami-Dade Police Department, including the locations at which they were conducted and the number of guns turned in at each event; (2) provide a proposed number of gun buy back events to be conducted on an annual basis by the Miami-Dade Police Department, including proposed locations for the events; and (3) evaluate partnering with municipal, state, federal, and private sector entities to identify resources that will support an increase in the number of annual gun buy back events conducted by the Miami-Dade Police Department. The County Mayor or County Mayor�s designee is further directed to provide a report describing the plan to this Board within 90 days of the effective date of this resolution. The completed report shall be placed on an agenda of the Board pursuant to Ordinance No. 14-65. |
