TITLE
RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AS A PURPLE HEART COUNTY

BODY
WHEREAS, the military decoration now known as the �Purple Heart� was established by General George Washington in 1782 as the �Badge of Military Merit,� and is the nation�s oldest military award and one of its most commonly recognized; and
WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed while engaged in combat with the enemy or during foreign peacekeeping missions; and
WHEREAS, according to the United States Census Bureau, Miami-Dade County is home to over 50,000 veterans; and
WHEREAS, among Miami-Dade County�s population of veterans are many living recipients of the Purple Heart in addition to the survivors of the hundreds of veterans from Miami-Dade County who have given their lives in the service of the United States in many armed conflicts; and
WHEREAS, this Board desires to recognize the service and sacrifice of recipients of the Purple Heart by declaring Miami-Dade County a �Purple Heart County,�
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board proclaims Miami-Dade County as a Purple Heart County.
