TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO APPROPRIATE FUNDING FOR THE CUTLER WETLANDS OBSERVATION FACILITY

BODY
WHEREAS, the Town of Cutler Bay has spent almost ten years planning its Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility project; and
WHEREAS, the project would revitalize an approximately 53-acre parcel of wetlands located at about SW 97th Avenue and SW 224th Street by constructing trails, boardwalks, and a wildlife observation tower, and by installing educational signage about the environment; and
WHEREAS, one of the main goals of the Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility is to serve as an educational lab for students at local schools who are studying environmental sciences; and
WHEREAS, another main goal of the Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility is to serve as a park open to the public, particularly because three different bicycle trails intersect there and the wetlands there are ideal for birdwatching, which could in turn promote ecotourism; and
WHEREAS, construction of the Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility could also help prevent illegal dumping and ATV usage, which have caused damage to the wetlands; and
WHEREAS, Cutler Bay has estimated the Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility project to cost $446,000, and although Cutler Bay has previously sought $200,000.00 in financial assistance from the State of Florida, Cutler Bay has not yet obtained financial assistance from the State of Florida; and
WHEREAS, the Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility would benefit the residents, the environment, and the economy of Miami-Dade County,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the Florida Legislature to appropriate funding for the Cutler Wetlands Observation Facility.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor, Senate President, House Speaker, and Chair and Members of the Miami-Dade County State Legislative Delegation.
Section 3. Directs the Countys state lobbyists to advocate for the appropriation set forth in Section 1 above, and authorizes and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to amend the 2020 State Legislative Package to include this item.
