Summer has come to an end and we're gearing up for an eventful fall season. I look forward to seeing local small-business owners at my Small Business Lending Workshop, which will take place from 10 a.m. - 12 noon on Thursday, October 6 at the North Dade Regional Library. Valuable information and resources will be available for attendees.

Save the date for the 10th Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, which will take place from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 at Country Village Park. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with me at this fun, family-friendly event.

Students explore medical field, engineering, and more through Jordan's internship program

For 8 to 10 weeks, 30 students were paid to work in County government and the private sector as part of Commissioner Jordan's Summer Youth Internship Initiative program.

Commissioner Jordan hosts Bookmania! to promote youth literacy

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan and Miami Gardens Councilman David Williams Jr. co-sponsored Bookmania! to promote youth literacy on July 30 at the City of Miami Gardens Botanical Garden.

Proclamation presented to new Jackson Soul Food II restaurant in Opa-Locka

On August , Commissioner Barbara Jordan presented a proclamation to the owners of the Jackson Soul Food II restaurant in the City of Opa-locka. Jackson Soul Food II is located at 14511 NW 27th Avenue, Opa-locka, FL 33054.


Commissioner Seijas honored for developing Living Wage Ordinance

At the June 21 Miami-Dade County Commission meeting, Commissioner Jordan sponsored a special presentation honoring Commissioner Natacha Seijas for her work in developing the Living Wage Ordinance for Miami-Dade County following it being upheld after several challenges in the US Supreme Court.


Commissioner Jordan provides scholarship for swimming lessons

Commissioner Jordan presented Learn to Swim Scholarships checks to the City of Opa-locka. The scholarships, which total $5,500, will be used to promote water safety for youths and provide swimming lessons to prevent drownings.

 

In addition, the City of Miami Gardens was also awarded a Scholarship check for its Learn to Swim program.

Opa-locka interns chat with Commissioner Jordan about ethics

Summer interns from Opa-locka working with the Commission on Ethics & Public Trust had a candid discussion with Commissioner Jordan about ethical issues. On July 19, the high-school students asked questions about ethical issues that elected officials face and the importance of honesty and good ethical judgement.

Buildings named after Gibson and Campbell

Commissioner Jordan attended a building naming ceremony in the City of Miami Gardens for former Mayor Shirley Gibson and former Vice-Mayor Aaron Campbell. Miami Gardens City Hall is now known as the Shirley M. Gibson City Hall and the police department will be known as the Aaron Campbell Public Safety Complex.

 


Jordan, Signature Flight Support Aviation give away 500 book bags

On August 12, Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan and Signature Flight Support Aviation teamed up to donate 500 book bags, which were distributed to school children in District 1.

Jessie Trice and Children and Youth Wellness Center opens in Opa-locka

The Jessie Trice Community Health Center's Children and Youth Wellness Center made its debut in Opa-locka.

The Morning Mile encourages fitness and healthy lifestyle for kids

Summer campers at Country Village Park on June 20 were joined by AvMed and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan for the Morning Mile. The Morning Mile, sponsored by AvMed, is an important component of Miami-Dade Parks' summer camp program, where kids walk or run one mile a day.
