Happy New Year! I’m honored to begin the year 2013 as the Chairwoman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. Chairwoman Sosa was joined by her family on January 1, 2013, when she received the legal notarization as the new Chairwoman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. She has served in the Board since 2001 representing the residents of District 6, which include areas in the City of Miami, Coral Gables, West Miami, Hialeah and Miami Springs, as well as unincorporated Miami-Dade.

Chairwoman Sosa is assisting small businesses in District 6 through the Mom & Pop Small Business Grant. Applicants may be eligible to receive anywhere from $1,000 up to $2,500 to help their business grow and become more successful. An informational workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Miami Springs Recreational Center, 1401 Westward Drive, Miami Springs, FL. Beginning January 16, 2013, applications will be available for download at www.miamidade.gov/district06.

Chairwoman Sosa hosted her annual District 6 Toy Drive bringing holiday cheer to more than 200 families experiencing tough financial times. Additionally, during the holiday season, the chairwoman sang with Mariachis at Christmas parties for seniors, attended tree lighting ceremonies, and co-hosted Radio Mambí’s Christmas show with Martha Flores.

The Miami-Dade County Office of Community Advocacy will hold its monthly FedAssist program on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Stephen P. Clark Center located at 111 NW 1st Street, Miami. Representatives from Senator Marco Rubio’s office will be assisting with a variety of federal issues such as U.S. passport applications, housing, transportation, child support, military/veteran affairs, and more. Chairwoman Sosa was honored by the Guardianship Program of Dade County for her continued support and leadership to help the vulnerable residents who benefit from the program. She was also honored by the Minority Chamber of Commerce as Community Public Leader of the Year in appreciation for her years of public service.

Chairwoman Sosa welcomed 5th grade students from South Hialeah Elementary to the commission chambers. During their field trip, the children shared their career goals, attended the commission meeting and learned about county government.
