As you and your family get into the holiday spirit and prepare for trick-or-treating, please be mindful of safety tips provided by our own Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. SOUTHCOM honors Commissioner Diaz
On October 11, Commissioner Diaz was presented with the Outstanding Civilian Service Award by Gen. Douglas Fraser, Commander of U.S. Southern Command for his longstanding support to SOUTHCOM and the Miami-Dade County's military community. Commissioner Diaz has always been supportive of SOUTHCOM since it relocated from Panama in 1997. The Outstanding Civilian Service Award was created in 1959 by the Secretary of the Army, to recognize private citizens for outstanding service resulting in noteworthy contributions to a command.

Responsible pet ownership
On October 2, the Board of Commission passed an ordinance presented by Commissioner Diaz that will tighten animal regulation and expand the County's dangerous dog ordinance to promote responsible pet ownership. The ordinance will now penalize those who train fighting dogs and training dogs to fight as an act of cruelty and raises penalties for injuries caused by dogs. The ordinance also calls for a creation of an online dangerous dog registry to inform the residents of Miami-Dade County about dangerous dogs in their neighborhood.

Commissioner Diaz teams up with Badia Spices to raise funds for Autism
On October 30, Commissioner Diaz joined Badia Spices CEO Joseph 'Pepe' Badia on the factory line to label and package Badia's one liter extra virgin olive oil to raise funds for children and young adults with autism. For each bottle sold from September 1 to December 31, Badia Spices will donate 5 percent of the proceeds to the Dan Marino Foundation to empower children and young adults with special needs so their future can take root and blossom. Commissioner Diaz has always been a strong supporter of raising awareness and funds for autism. The Commissioner also sponsored a resolution in 2011, urging the Florida Legislature to establish the Dan Marino Foundation Florida Vocational College, which will assist students ages 18 to 28 who have development disabilities and who are no longer eligible for exceptional student education funding due to age or graduation from high school, with the opportunity to obtain a post-secondary education on a college campus setting.

Commissioner Diaz praises start of U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement
Commissioner Jose 'Pepe' Diaz applauded news that the U.S.-Panama Trade Promotion Agreement will go into effect starting October 31, 2012. Commissioner Diaz had been a major advocate for the agreement and is a member Commissioner Diaz is a member of the Federal Intergovernmental Policy Advisory Committee on Trade under the Office of the United States Trade Representative. He supported the passage of free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea, all of which were approved by Congress last October.

WrestleMania 28 generates $102.7 million for Miami-Dade County
In April, Miami-Dade County had the pleasure of hosting WrestleMania28 and as the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission, Commissioner Diaz is happy to report that the economic impact generated was $102.7 million for Miami-Dade County. The Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Sports Commission look forward to hosting another WrestleMania in the very near future.

Need assistance paying your utility bills?
The Miami-Dade Community Action Agency’s (CAA) Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is currently assisting eligible residents with payment of their gas or electric bills. The program assists individuals who are experiencing an increase in their energy bill due to the weather as well as individuals with final notices or those who have had their services disconnected. Applications for LIHEAP are available Monday through Friday at CAA Service Centers like the Hialeah Service Center, 300 E. First Avenue, or the Sweetwater Service Center, 250 SW 114 Avenue. For a complete list of all the CAA Service Centers or to download the application, please visit the County’s website or contact the Miami-Dade Community Action Agency at 786-469-4600.

SR 836/Dolphin Expressway closures
On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway. To help Miami-Dade County residents, the Miami-Dade Public Library System is offering a wide assortment of vital information and valuable assistance for job seekers! From computer classes and access to the Internet, to help with resume writing, job interviewing skills and test preparation, the Library wants to help patrons prepare for and search for jobs. Free classes are held throughout all 47 branch locations and are available in both English and Spanish.
