Dear residents,

I would like to invite everyone to participate in the “Support Our Police” Ride and Rally taking place on Sunday, February 8. This event is to show our unwavering support for all law enforcement and is in partnership with the Dade County Police Benevolent Association.


The event will kick-off with a bike run from the parking lot of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association (PBA), starting with registration at 11 a.m. and proceed to Tropical Park, where a ceremony/rally will take place to honor our fallen police. Proceeds from the bike run will benefit the PBA Love Fund. Non-riders are encouraged to be at Tropical Park at 1 p.m.

Commissioner Diaz participates in Three Kings Parade

On January 11, Commissioner Diaz attended the annual “Three Kings Parade”. The commissioner greeted the crowd and proudly rode alongside the men and women of the military. The parade is a South Florida tradition, where hundreds of thousands of residents come and are able to see their favorite politicians, radio hosts and television personalities. The parade is in their 45th year and took place along SW 8th street between 4th and 17th Avenue in Little Havana. The event is sponsored by Univision Radio.

Congrats to MDFR Class#125

On January 9, Commissioner Diaz was on honored to attend the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) graduation of its newest firefighter recruit class at MDFR’s Training Facility. The ceremony focused on the hard work and dedication of Class 125 during the intense 10 week training. The new firefighters, 17 men and one woman, bring extensive experience to MDFR since more than half of the new recruits have served with other career fire departments. Commissioner Diaz congratulated all new firefighters, especially Class Leader Jose E. Gonzalez, a veteran, who served nine years in the United States Air Force as a firefighter. He was also a member of Operation Enduring Freedom and served in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2012.

Commissioner Diaz attends Leave No Veteran Behind Job Fair event at MIA

Commissioner Diaz joined Miami-Dade Aviation Department Emilio T. Gonzalez to welcome over 200 veterans to the “Leave No Veteran Behind” Employment Fair and Expo on January 20 at Miami International Airport, where over 70 companies were on hand, ready to hire our veterans. The event was sponsored by Miami International Airport, The Veterans Enterprise VETS Group, Airport Minority Advisory Council, American Association of Airport Executive, Paradies and Avis Budget Group. Commissioner Diaz serves as the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board and both Commissioner Diaz and Director Gonzalez served in the military.

Commissioner Diaz cheers Miami Marathon runners

Commissioner Diaz has made it a tradition to be on hand to cheer the runners participating in the annual Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. On January 25, he welcomed over 25,000 runners in front of the American Airlines Arena. More than 80 Countries were represented in this year’s race. Commissioner Diaz attends the Dan Marino Foundation Walkabout Autism

Commissioner Diaz, a strong advocate for Autism awareness attended the annual Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism event on January 24 at Sun Life Stadium. Commissioner Diaz joined thousands of people to raise awareness and funds for the Dan Marino Foundation. The Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism event guarantees that every dollar raised stays in South Florida and benefits our local autism community. Miami-Dade parks hosting free "python patrol" training workshop

'Python Patrol' is a training program provided by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), is grooming a task force of wildlife workers and volunteers to help fight South Florida’s invasion of Burmese pythons, which presents a threat to native wildlife. The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department has teamed up with FWC to invite residents to take part in this important community initiative by participating in free “Python Patrol Training Workshop” that will be offered  on Sunday, February 22  at Bill Sadowki Park (Miami EcoAdventures Center), 17555 SW 79 Avenue in Palmetto Bay from 10am to 12 pm. The workshop participants will learn how to identify, report and safely capture Burmese pythons. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required for the workshop. Free February features exhibit evening at Deering Estate at Cutler

The February Features Exhibit Evening will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Deering Estate at Cutler. The exhibit evening is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. The exhibit will be on display daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from February 7 – March 20, 2015, and is free with Estate admission. SR 836/Dolphin Expressway closures

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
