MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women and the Domestic Violence Oversight Board, under the Office of Community Advocacy, hosted a Diaper Driver in partnership with the Miami Diaper Bank during the month of August to benefit mothers residing in domestic violence shelters. Donations kept coming in and on Friday, Oct. 9, volunteers delivered nearly 3,000 diapers to the collection point.

Government assistance programs, such as food stamps and WIC do not provide funding for diapers. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, babies and toddlers are most vulnerable,” said National Diaper Bank Executive Director Joanne Goldblum. “There is a lot of diaper need in our country and changes in legislative policies have to take place.”

A survey conducted by Huggies and in partnership with the National Diaper Bank Network, found that 1 in 3 families in the United States experience "diaper need" — difficulty providing enough diapers to keep a baby or toddler consistently clean, dry, and healthy. Not being able to afford enough diapers often means parents end up leaving a child in wet, dirty, or with reused diapers for a prolonged period of time, which can lead to a number of health effects for both mom and baby. To minimize the local diaper need, the Commission for Women and the Domestic Violence Oversight Board joined forces.

The Miami-Dade County Domestic Violence Advisory Board (DVOB) was established by Miami-Dade County Ordinance in 1994 and on Oct. 1, 2019, it was moved to the Office of Community Advocacy by County resolution.
