TITLE
RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MAYOR OR COUNTY MAYOR’S DESIGNEE TO STUDY AND TAKE ALL NECESSARY STEPS TO IMPLEMENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF MICRO HOUSES; AND TO REPORT TO THE BOARD REGARDING SAME WITHIN 120 DAYS

WHEREAS, as this Board recognized in adopting the Workforce Housing Development Program codified as Article XIIA of Chapter 33, the labor force in Miami-Dade County continues to require moderately priced housing units, and Miami-Dade County has a significant shortage of housing affordable to individuals and families of moderate incomes; and
WHEREAS, one national trend that could help alleviate this housing shortage is the development of micro houses, which often measure less than 300 square feet; and
WHEREAS, micro houses would encourage the efficient use of land by accommodating greater population density in a smaller area; and
WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade County Comprehensive Development Master Plan (“CDMP”) and the County’s zoning code contain density minimums and maximums that would have to be considered in promoting the development of micro houses; and
WHEREAS, this Board wishes to encourage the development of micro houses, including consideration of any regulatory changes that may be necessary to authorize it,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board hereby directs the County Mayor or the County Mayor’s designee to study and take all necessary steps to implement the development of micro houses, including seeking sponsorship for any necessary amendments to the CDMP and the zoning code, to report to this Board within 120 days of the effective date of this resolution, and to place the completed report on an agenda of the Board pursuant to Ordinance No. 14-65.
