Global Gateway

With big-ship capabilities facilitated by the completion of over $1 billion worth of infrastructure investments, PortMiami is serving ocean carrier customers who greatly benefit from the Global Gateway’s strategic location, linking worldwide markets with U.S. consumers and producers.

Upon completion in 2015 of the historic Deep Dredge undertaking, PortMiami’s channel reached a depth measured at -50/-52 feet, capable of accommodating containerships that require a deeper draft to handle today’s big ships. The project coincided with the 2016 opening of the expanded Panama Canal, to which PortMiami is the closest deepwater port on the Atlantic Seaboard.

To date, PortMiami has welcomed more than 350 post-Panamax vessels that would not have been able to call upon the port without the deeper channel and the port’s contingent of super-post-Panamax container cranes.

The port’s improved multimodal interconnectivity provides additional advantages to its customers. A fast-access tunnel, used by more than 23 million vehicles since opening in 2014, provides a direct link to the Interstate highway system and takes about 80 percent of port traffic off
downtown Miami streets. Its on-dock intermodal rail delivers goods to 70 percent of the U.S. population within four days. PortMiami’s transportation links are furthered by our cooperation with and close proximity to Miami International Airport, which ranks No. 1 among U.S. airports in international cargo volume and No. 3 in international passenger traffic.

PortMiami is the closest U.S. East Coast port to Mexico’s thriving Gulf Coast. Its existing containerized cargo services to Veracruz, Altamira, and Puerto Morelos provide shippers an ideal gateway for Mexican manufactured goods and agricultural products.

Advantages of PortMiami-Mexico’s All-Water Route includes, fast to market, substantial savings, and increased supply chain certainty.

Deep water accessibility and intermodal connections to the national rail system among other deployed infrastructure improvements make PortMiami an ideal gateway for Mexican exports to Florida and the Southeastern United States. Learn more

The PortMiami-Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway connection offers the fastest access to Southeastern U.S. consumer markets and beyond. With the deepening of our channel to –50/–52 feet, PortMiami's rail access offers and increased speed to market and more opportunity for shippers and ocean carriers alike.
