In the News....
Florida Regional Planning Council - Commissioner Sosa was appointed to the South Florida Regional Planning Council by Chairman Dennis C. Moss during the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. The Council's mission is to identify the long-term challenges and opportunities facing Southeast Florida regional transportation.
New Committee Created - On August 26, 2009, Commissioner Rebeca Sosa was appointed Chairperson of the County's new Performance and Efficiency Commission by Chairman Dennis C. Moss. The Committee will identify inefficiencies in how departments run and to improve any processes for better service for residents.

Laws Passed and Presented by Commissioner Sosa
- Commissioner Sosa presented a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to pass legislation improving the screening process of people placed in positions of trust working with children, the elderly and the disabled.
- A resolution was presented by Commissioner Sosa urging the Governor and Florida Legislature to maintain funding for critical programs for the elderly.
- Commissioner Sosa presented and won approval of a resolution directing the Mayor to explore the possibility of expanding the Miami Beach Convention Center, including the development of a new on-site convention center hotel.
- In her continued efforts to help residents, Commissioner Sosa won approval of a resolution she presented urging the Florida Legislature to pass laws that would provide homeowners and small businesses additional flexibility in making partial payments of property taxes.
- Commissioner Sosa has urged the Florida Legislature to create and fund a State program to assist homeowners in addressing Chinese Drywall and asked the County Mayor to report on the prevalence of Chinese Drywall.
- Commissioner Sosa continues advocating for the elderly, most recently she presented and obtained passage of a resolution urging Congress to increase funding targeted at fighting Medicare fraud.

After-School Programs for Children Ages 6-14
Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of affordable after-school programs for kids ages 6-14 at select parks Monday-Friday, from 2 pm - 6 pm through June 11, 2010. For information, please call 305-755-7800

Adult Day Care
If you or someone you know needs assistance with an elderly relative or young adult that is functionally impaired, Adult Day Care may be able to help. For information on a center near you, please call Miami-Dade County Department of Human Services at, 305-514-6000.

Miami-Dade County's Head Start/Early Head Start Program Now Accepting Applications
Applications accepted for the 2010-2011 program year. Miami-Dade Community Action Agency's (CAA) Head Start/Early Head Start Program will begin its open enrollment for the 2010-2011 program year, which will begin in August of 2010. Applications are being accepted until April 30, 2010 for pregnant women and children ages two months to five (5) years old (after September 1, 2010).
The program also provides services to families with children who are homeless. Applications are available at all Head Start/Early Head Start centers and CAA Community Service Centers throughout Miami-Dade County. Applications and a list of Head Start Centers may also be downloaded from the Community Action Agency website.

Stand Up and Be Counted....
In March 2010, every household in the United States will receive the Census questionnaire. Ten questions will take about ten minutes to complete and return, and individual answers are safe. By constitution and by law, no other government agencies or officials, including the President, can access individual data. Every Census Bureau worker takes an oath for life to protect the confidentiality of Census responses. The U. S. Census is easy, safe and important to all of us! Please make sure you are counted!

2nd Annual District 6 Toy Drive
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa brought the joy of the holiday season to the children of District 6 by hosting the 2nd Annual District 6 Toy Drive on Monday, December 14, 2009 at her District 6 office. Commissioner Sosa was joined by Santa Claus, Urbieta Oil Company representatives, the Miami-Dade County Police Explorers Post 513, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as she presented toys to over 350 underprivileged kids in District 6.

Local humanitarian medical group honored
On Thursday, December 17, 2009, Commissioner Sosa presented members of the Miami Medical Team Foundation (MMTF), a proclamation for the organization's outstanding humanitarian service. The MMTF is a non-profit foundation dedicated to improving the sanitary and medical conditions in Third World countries, particularly in nations hardest hit by natural and man-made catastrophes. Since it was founded in the 1980's the group has donated supplies and extended their medical/surgical services to citizens totaling 19 countries.
