Chairwoman Sosa sponsors expansion of afterschool program
Local schoolchildren will get homework assistance and lessons in healthy habits at four more locations throughout Miami-Dade County thanks to the expansion of an afterschool program approved by the County Commission.

Commissioners on May 6 adopted a resolution sponsored by Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa to expand the Kids Aspire Program into four additional County parks under a partnership between Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Health, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and the University of Florida/Miami-Dade County Extension.

The Kids Aspire Program, administered by the Office of Community Advocacy, currently provides homework assistance to students ages 6 to 14 at a number of Miami-Dade parks.

The four new locations that will begin offering afterschool help in the coming school year will be Olinda Park, 2101 NW 51st St.; Ruben Dario Park, 9825 W. Flagler Street; Modello Park, 28450 SW 152nd Ave.; and South Dade Park, 28151 SW 164th Ave.

In addition to getting homework help from current and retired teachers and volunteers, children participating in the program will receive lessons in health, personal hygiene and safety.

“I’m thrilled to see so many local agencies team up to expand educational opportunities for young people in our community,” Chairwoman Sosa said. “This partnership to expand the Kids Aspire Program will provide a safe and nurturing environment for schoolchildren in underserved areas to engage in quality afterschool learning.
