Dear Friends of District 8,

Happy New Year and thank you for reading the latest District 8 news. Team 8 is back in full swing and we have many exciting initiatives planned for 2016.

Several of our legislative items were heard at the first Board of County Commissioners meeting of the year, including important transit legislation. Keep reading to find out more.

The South Dade Solutions Summit was a major event this past June and we have since created the South Dade Success Plan. We are dedicated to reporting back to the community and we have many solutions and achievements to share. Check out our South Dade Success Plan Mid-Year Report below and tell us what you think!

In January, we honored Dr. Martin Luther King's enduring legacy. Among his many teachings, the wise Dr. King advocated for a more engaged citizenry that prioritizes service and civic participation. Let us honor Dr. King every day of the year by lifting up our community and working together to move us all forward.

I am always eager for your thoughts and ideas. Please reach out to us at [email protected], call us at 305-375-5218/305-378-6677 or chat with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Yours for a participatory 2016,

Daniella

Lobbying for Miami-Dade in Tallahassee

The legislative session started early this year, and I traveled to our capital to lobby for Miami-Dade needs. I testified in support of expanding KidCare to more U.S. resident children and met with several legislators to discuss our community's priorities.

HB 89/SB 248 would eliminate the 5-year waiting period before legal US resident children are eligible for KidCare. The bills would make health coverage available to a significant number of legal immigrant children at a much lower cost than treating children in the emergency room. I commend Rep. Jose Feliz Diaz and Senator Rene Garcia for sponsoring this legislation.

Talking Child Services at History Miami

I was honored to moderate a panel on child services at the History Miami Pedro Pan exhibit. Panelists included members of the Children's Trust, Amigos for Kids and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Many residents who came to the United States under Operation Pedro Pan attended the panel and told their inspiring stories about a historic moment that helped shape the fabric of Miami-Dade. Check out History Miami's 2016 exhibits and programs here.
