Our History
Miami-Dade County’s history reflects the broader American story of resilience, diversity, and progress. Originally home to the Tequesta and later the Miccosukee and Seminole tribes, the region became part of the United States in 1821 when Florida joined the Union.
Miami’s growth accelerated in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad, transforming it into a gateway for trade and culture. Waves of immigration—from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and beyond—shaped Miami-Dade into one of the most diverse counties in America, embodying the ideals of freedom and opportunity.
Today, its vibrant communities, innovation, and cultural richness mirror the nation’s ongoing pursuit of democracy and inclusion. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, Miami-Dade stands as a testament to the power of unity in diversity and the promise of a future built on shared values.
