Commissioner Sosa continues to advocate finding ways to improve County services while keeping our local government cost-effective and efficient. As Chairperson of the County’s Performance and Efficiency Committee, the Commissioner has been tasked with identifying inefficiencies and making recommendations to improve the functions of County Departments.
Focused on ensuring the future of Jackson Hospital and the Public Health Trust, Commissioner Sosa presented a resolution at the December Health, Public Safety and Intergovernmental Committee establishing a Hospital Governance Task Force. This taskforce will consider alternative leadership models for Jackson and also explore the possible benefits of operating Jackson as private, not-for-profit or via independent tax district. This item will appear before the full Board of County Commissioners on January 20, 2011.
This past November, Commissioner Sosa presented a resolution urging Florida legislators to revisit the statewide “Red Light Camera” legislation passed during the 2010 session. This State legislation allows local governments to install and use red light cameras at intersections to cite red-light violators. Commissioner Sosa’s resolution requests that State legislators eliminate using the cameras to cite drivers making legal, right-turns on red. In addition, the item requests that legislators provide a funding mechanism to address the additional cost-burden on the court system as a consequence from the use of the cameras.
The Board of County Commissioners in November approved a resolution presented by Commissioner Sosa allocating $1.5 million from the District 6 Building Better Communities Obligation Bond (BBC GOB) Program towards the construction of a multi-purpose recreational facility in the City of Miami. This facility is planned to be built at “West End Park” located at 250 SW 60th Avenue, and will include a pool, gymnasium, outdoor ball fields, meeting rooms, after school care, cultural and arts programs and parking for use of the facility.
A resolution presented by Commissioner Sosa directing the County Mayor to conduct an analysis and report to the Board of County Commissioners any potential impacts on cruise and cargo businesses at the Port of Miami caused by the construction of the Port of Miami Tunnel. Protecting the cruise and cargo businesses associated with the Port of Miami is extremely important to our community since those businesses serve as basic anchors to sustain our local economy.

Over 600 turkeys were distributed within District 6 to needy families, senior centers, elderly living facilities, and schools during the “Annual District 6 Thanksgiving Turkey Drive” hosted by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa.
Commissioner Sosa hosted the first “District 6 Fair of County Services” in West Miami. During the fair, district residents were able to obtain information and assistance directly from a variety of the 17 participating County departments.
The Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of South Florida and Commissioner Sosa hosted a workshop to assist the Puerto Rican Community in understanding a new law aimed at combating fraud against U.S. citizens born in Puerto Rico.
The City of Miami Springs honored Commissioner Sosa by naming the theater portion of the City’s new-multi-purpose and recreation center after her. This was in tribute to the Commissioner’s long-time efforts and dedication to the residents of the City of Miami Springs.
Commissioner Sosa was invited by the Coral Gables Garden Club to take part in the unveiling ceremony of a monument in honor of the late Mrs. Althea Fink Merrick, mother of George Merrick, founder of the City of Coral Gables and one of the earliest members of the Coral Gables Garden Club.
As a breast cancer survivor, Commissioner Sosa knows the importance of encouraging women to put their health first. Her commitment to the fight to find a cure for this devastating disease has led her to Chair the American Cancer Society 2010 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and the Miami Dolphins organization presented her with a check in the amount of $15,000 towards the purchase of mastectomy bras for breast cancer survivors.
