  • File #130511 - Ordinance calling for the Commission Auditor to complete background research on any person, organization, place or thing that is the subject of a naming, renaming or codesignation of Miami-Dade County roads, facilities or property. CHAIRWOMAN'S SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Farewell to Mr. Christopher Mazzella
Mr. Christopher Mazzella, Miami-Dade inspector general, announced his plans to retire at the end of April after 14 years of service. Mr. Mazzella was appointed as Miami-Dade’s first Inspector General in September 1998, upon retiring from a distinguished thirty-four year career with the FBI. On behalf of our residents, we sincerely appreciate his dedication to Miami-Dade County and wish him the best in this well-deserved retirement.

Welcome Dr. Emilio T. González
Dr. Emilio Gonzalez has been appointed as the new director of the Miami-Dade County Department of Aviation, where he directs the operations at Miami International Airport (MIA) and four general aviation airports in the Miami area. Prior to joining Miami-Dade County, Dr. Gonzalez was President and CEO of NPI Advisors, an international and government affairs consulting firm. I offer a warm welcome to Dr. Gonzalez and wish him the best of luck in this new task.

Free tax preparation service
Low-income individuals can have their 2012 taxes prepared and filed electronically at select service centers through April 15. Learn more

Renew Golden Passport

Golden Passports for customers under age 65 expire on April 30. Don't wait until the deadline to renew your eligibility. Avoid long lines and wait times and ensure continued use of Transit services.

Amigos for Kids
Chairwoman Sosa attended the annual Celebration of Friendship luncheon hosted by Amigos for Kids. She presented the Lollipop Award to Mr. Jorge Placensia for his dedication to the mission of Amigos for Kids, to prevent child abuse and neglect by valuing children, strengthening families and educating communities. The Lollipop Award is in honor of Lazaro Figueroa, a 3 year-old-boy whose body was found dumped beneath a hedge in the yard of a Miami Beach home in November of 1990.

Dade Days
Chairwoman Sosa travelled to Tallahassee, along with local elected officials, for Dade Days showcasing Miami-Dade County and our municipalities to focus on the needs of our community. For 25 years, Dade Days in Tallahassee takes place during the annual Florida Legislative Session and includes more than 1,000 attendees, who represent over 200 organizations, from both the private and public sectors.

FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine
Chairwoman Sosa honored the 2013 inaugural class of FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. She was joined by FIU President Dr. Mark B. Rosenberg, Founding Dean Dr. John Rock and students of the 2013 class who recently celebrated their perfect match to their individual residency programs. The College of Medicine was approved in 2006 by the Florida Board of Governors and the Florida Legislature.

Coral Park Senior High
Chairwoman Sosa welcomed students from Coral Park Senior High to the District 6 office. The students interviewed the chairwoman as part of a class project on community leaders.

Beacon Awards
Chairwoman Sosa attended the 11th Annual Beacon Awards aboard the Celebrity Constellation. The event honors individuals, industries and organizations which have contributed to strengthen our local economy. The prestigious Jay Malina Award was given to Richard D. Fain, Chairman & CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises. Fain was recognized for his leadership and notable contributions to Miami-Dade County.

Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association
Chairwoman Sosa attended the Annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association's Gala Dinner & Entertainment Extravaganza. Created in 1972, the Association is a not-for-profit trade organization composed of 15 Member Cruise Lines operating more than 100 vessels in Floridian, Caribbean and Latin American waters.

Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce
Chairwoman Sosa attended the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Business Luncheon. The luncheon served as an opportunity to acknowledge those who truly make a difference in the lives of Miami-Dade County residents through their job and/or community involvement.

In the Company of Women
Chairwoman Sosa attended Miami-Dade Parks’ annual event In the Company of Women recognizing 14 women who have helped shape the South Florida community through their artistic talents, business acumen, pioneering spirit, ingenuity and courage. The chairwoman was also honored as the “Woman of the Year” for being elected to lead her colleagues as Chair of the Board of County Commission.

International Women's Day Award
Chairwoman Sosa was honored with the 2013 International Women's Day Award presented by World Trade Center Miami. Thank you to the Board of Directors and Executive Officers for this recognition.

Chairwoman Sosa invites the community to a free Movie Night at Cooper Park featuring The Lorax beginning at sundown, approximately 7:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy free popcorn and a bounce house for kids. Families are encouraged to bring their chairs or blankets to sit comfortably throughout the film. Refreshment and food truck vendors will be on site beginning at 6 p.m.

The Miami-Dade County Office of Community Advocacy will hold its monthly DMV-to-Go event. Residents can receive assistance in attaining or renewing a driver’s license or identification card, as well as several federal services. Due to limited space, residents interested in obtaining a driver’s license or ID card must make an online appointment.

Take the Train, Take the Test

The Miami-Dade County Health Department has partnered with Miami-Dade Transit and 3-1-1 to offer free HIV testing to the public at select Metrorail stations. HIV test results available in as little as 20 minutes. Counseling will also be available on-site.

Miami will host the sixth annual Miami International Agriculture & Cattle Show, April 12-14, as well as the Magic City Sale at the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40 Street, Miami.

Baynanza - April 20
Celebrate the 31st annual Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day on April 20, when thousands of volunteers will descend upon 23 locations to help keep Miami-Dade County beautiful. Register today! Boat captains can also volunteer.

Redland Blues & Barbecue Festival - April 20-21
Enjoy tantalizing BBQ and incredible blues and country music from April 20-21 at the Redland Blues & Barbecue Festival. Admission is $8 and children under 11 years of age are admitted free.
