The Miami-Dade Commission for Women commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The Act was the first federal law prohibiting sex discrimination and marked the first time that the federal government put the emerging issue of women in the workplace at the forefront of public consciousness.  The Act ranks as one of the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation of the 1960s along with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Chairwoman Sosa celebrated United Nations World Refugee Day at the Stephen P. Clark Center. She also presented a proclamation declaring June 20th as World Refugee Day in Miami-Dade County.

The signing ceremony took place at Hialeah Gardens Elementary School, where Governor Scott was joined by Chairwoman Sosa, Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, school board members and students.

Chairwoman Sosa presented a proclamation honoring Dr. Richard Zakheim, founder of Miami Children’s Hospital’s Cardiology Department. The summit brought together major stakeholders, agencies, community and select national experts.

The City of Hialeah hosted the grand opening of Milander Center in Hialeah, located at 4800 Palm Avenue. The 34,500-square-foot state-of-the-art Milander Center nearly doubles the size of the previous Milander Auditorium and offers a variety of amenities including a grand staircase leading to a garden terrace overlooking the beautiful city, an amphitheater, and exhibit space.

Chairwoman Sosa attended the League Against Cancer’s 38th annual telethon at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition Center. She presented a donation check on behalf of Miami-Dade County and a proclamation honoring the organization’s president, Dr. Luis Villa, Jr., and its executive vice president, Adriana Cora.

Rusk, 19, who was a canine handler killed by an enemy sniper in Afghanistan in 2010 as he and his canine partner Eli were clearing an improvised explosive device.  In Rusk's honor, the U.S. Department of Defense named a canine, CColton, after him.
