Miami-Dade County is privileged to host the world’s number one basketball team, and we salute the team’s tremendously talented players, owners, managers and coaches for bringing such prestige to our community with their second consecutive NBA title.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MIAMI HEAT!
Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa, along with members of Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, today proudly presented the Miami HEAT with a proclamation declaring Monday, June 24, 2013, as “Miami Heat 2013 NBA Champions Day,” in recognition of the team’s spectacular NBA championship victory. The proclamation was presented during a celebratory rally inside the American Airlines Arena, which followed the HEAT victory parade along the streets of Miami.

Chairwoman Sosa joined Commissioner Esteban Bovo and Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez at the unveiling of Operation Pedro Pan Avenue located in the area of West 12 Avenue between 44th and 49th streets in the City of Hialeah.
The Miami-Dade Commission for Women commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The Act was the first federal law prohibiting sex discrimination and marked the first time that the federal government put the emerging issue of women in the workplace at the forefront of public consciousness. The Act ranks as one of the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation of the 1960s along with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Chairwoman Sosa celebrated United Nations World Refugee Day at the Stephen P. Clark Center. She also presented a proclamation declaring June 20th as World Refugee Day in Miami-Dade County.
Governor Rick Scott signed HB 113 making it a third-degree felony for an adult to knowingly distribute or post harmful materials to a minor on public or private school property. The signing ceremony took place at Hialeah Gardens Elementary School, where Governor Scott was joined by Chairwoman Sosa, Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, school board members and students.
Chairwoman Sosa presented a proclamation honoring Dr. Richard Zakheim, founder of Miami Children’s Hospital’s Cardiology Department. Serving as its director from 1977 until 2002, Dr. Zakheim and his staff led the pediatric cardiology division to become a world leader in the care of children with congenital heart disorders.
Chairwoman Sosa attended the 2013 Transportation Summit, an effort by the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT) to begin to chart the course of future transit development beyond the Orange Line. The summit brought together major stakeholders, agencies, community and select national experts.
The City of Hialeah hosted the grand opening of Milander Center in Hialeah, located at 4800 Palm Avenue. The 34,500-square-foot state-of-the-art Milander Center nearly doubles the size of the previous Milander Auditorium and offers a variety of amenities including a grand staircase leading to a garden terrace overlooking the beautiful city, an amphitheater, and exhibit space.
Chairwoman Sosa attended the League Against Cancer’s 38th annual telethon at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition Center. She presented a donation check on behalf of Miami-Dade County and a proclamation honoring the organization’s president, Dr. Luis Villa, Jr., and its executive vice president, Adriana Cora.
Chairwoman Sosa attended the annual Spring Meeting hosted by the Gables Good Government Committee at the Biltmore Hotel. She was honored with the Civic Leader of the Year Award for her outstanding service as Commissioner of District 6, which covers parts of Coral Gables.
Chairwoman Sosa attended a ceremony at Miami International Airport to dedicate a new canine training area in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Colton W. Rusk, 19, who was a canine handler killed by an enemy sniper in Afghanistan in 2010 as he and his canine partner Eli were clearing an improvised explosive device. In Rusk's honor, the U.S. Department of Defense named a canine, CColton, after him.
Chairwoman Sosa attended the grand opening of the newly renovated customer service area of the Miami-Dade County Office of the Property Appraiser.

Clark Center, 111 NW 1 Street, Suite 201, Miami, FL 33128 Residents can receive assistance in attaining or renewing a driver’s license or identification card, as well as several federal services. Take the Train, Take the Test Wednesday, July 31, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Metrorail Station: Government Center The Miami-Dade County Health Department has partnered with Miami-Dade Transit and 3-1-1 to offer free HIV testing to the public at select Metrorail stations. HIV test results available in as little as 20 minutes. Counseling will also be available on-site. For additional information, please call 305-375-5730.

Homeowners who reside in single-family residences may qualify for a unique program that will allow them to have the exterior of their home painted and/or fitted with accordion hurricane shutters. The program is funded through Surtax dollars and is available through the Miami-Dade Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD). For more information about this program and other services available to assist low-income homeowners, please call 786-469-4600 or visit the Miami-Dade County web portal.
The Miami-Dade Community Action and Human Services Department will provide free meals to children at sites throughout Miami-Dade County, as part of the 2013 Summer Food Service Program funded through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Program will operate from June 10 through August 16, 2013. All children 18 years old and younger are eligible for meals at no cost.
