Black Affairs Advisory Board Chair's Message
Miami-Dade County's Black population constitutes 17.4% of the 2.5 million residents who call this county “home.” The Black Affairs Advisory Board does not have all the answers to the multitude of issues within our county. However, we endeavor to represent and advocate for the diverse body of those within the African Diaspora. Our committees, which represent many ongoing issues and concerns, are: Respect Life, Economic Development, Housing, Budget & Finance, Education, Health and Black Heritage. Each of these committees work in conjunction with our Commissioners and community agencies to address concerns through our “Village Dialogues “and requests for Disparity Studies; and other ways of calling for direct action.
Our annual events include the Pillars Awards where we recognize outstanding leaders in select fields. This fundraiser also provides scholarships for outstanding “Young Pillars.” Our Black Heritage Committee consists of volunteers who plan activities for Black History Month and a variety of other culture related events.
During 2011-2012, the BAAB's “Call to Action” is placing special emphasis on the number of violent deaths in our community through the Respect Life Committee. The M-CRT (Miami-Dade Community Response Team) will seek to coordinate services to assist families who have experienced trauma. We are also striving to respond to these dire economic times though our Economic Development Committee.
Along these lines, we invite you to attend our monthly meetings which are open to the public. Our meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 10:00 am in the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, located at 111 NW 1st Street in the 10th floor Conference Room. If you would like to address the board, please call 305-375-4606 to be added to the monthly agenda.
Sincerely, Priscilla Dames-BlakeBack to Top Page Last Edited: Thu Apr 25, 2013 9:49:17 AM
