Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) recently partnered with Black Girls CODE (BGC) to bring one of its workshops to a Miami Targeted Urban Area. BGC, a San Francisco based nonprofit, is committed to introducing girls of color to careers in computer programming and technology.  The first computer coding workshop, “Building A Webpage in a Day” took place on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center, in Liberty City. The workshop was sold out. Girls from the age of 7 to 17 participated in this stimulating workshop.

The workshop introduced participants to computer coding through the process of building their own unique webpage using fun games and activities. The workshop featured HTML, CSS, and basic web structure.’

The event also featured a panel for parents that provided an understanding of the importance and significance of technology in every day information. Panelists were experts across various segments of the tech industry and gave their perspective on ways parents can help maintain a high level of engagement for young girls in tech-focused activities.
