Safety Tips: Portable Space Heaters
While portable space heaters are commonly used to supplement central heating or heat individual rooms during cold weather, they can pose a serious fire risk if not used correctly. Most home fires in the winter are linked to improperly installed, poorly maintained, or misused heating equipment. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), improper use of heating equipment is a leading cause of home fires in the U.S.
Stay warm safely by following these portable space heaters tips:
- Purchase electric space heaters that have been tested by a qualified laboratory and are Underwriters Laboratories (UL)-approved
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions
- Choose a heater with a thermostat and overheat protection. Look for models with safety features such as an automatic shut-off when tipped over
- Ensure the heater is clean and free of dust to maintain efficiency and safety. Always place the heater on a flat, solid surface
- Never use a space heater in damp or wet areas
- Check cords for any signs of damage before use
- Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, and avoid using extension cords. If you must use one, ensure it’s the appropriate size and length. Never run cords under rugs or carpets
- Keep anything that can burn, like curtains, furniture, or bedding, at least three-feet away from your portable heater
- Have a three-foot kid and pet-free zone around portable electric space heaters
- Keep heaters out of the way of foot traffic and never block an exit
- Never use grills or other fuel-burning appliances inside, as they can produce dangerous carbon monoxide
- Never use your oven to heat your home
- Always turn off and unplug your heater when leaving the room or going to bed
Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and ensure they are working properly by replacing the batteries regularly.
