Taxicab For-Hire License
Chapter 31, Article II of the Miami-Dade County Code requires anyone wishing to provide for-hire taxicab services to first obtain a for-hire taxicab license. Taxicab service is on-demand or prearranged transportation using vehicles that seat nine passengers or less, including the driver. Taxicab vehicles are sedans, station wagons, minivans and sport utility vehicles.
For-hire transportation in Miami-Dade County is licensed and regulated to assure the passengers, as well as others utilizing the streets of Miami-Dade County, that the vehicles are fit and their operators and chauffeurs are competent to provide such service.
The Miami-Dade County taxicab for-hire license system is a medallion system. This system deems a taxicab for-hire license to be intangible property. The owner of a taxicab medallion can use the medallion as collateral to secure a loan from a bank or any other financial institution.
