Events
Golden Veterans' Parade
The Miami-Dade County Military Affairs Board will host the “Golden Veterans Parade – 50th Anniversary Commemoration” to welcome back our Vietnam & Bay of Pigs Veterans properly. The parade will take place at noon on Friday, November 8, 2013, down Flagler Street into Bayfront Park for a recognition ceremony and concert. This event has been inspired by the Presidential proclamation naming the next 13 years the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, and seeks to honor those veterans who were never given a proper welcome back reception. For more information visit their website.
Hispanic Heritage Month
Miami-Dade County Commission Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa, the Board of County Commissioners and the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board invited the public to a Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff Celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center (Government Center), 111 N.W. 1st St. in downtown Miami. “This year commemorates the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida in 1513, which marked the start of Hispanic heritage and settlement in this beautiful state we call home,” Chairwoman Sosa said. “As we embark on our countywide celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month, I can’t think of a better occasion to celebrate the tremendous cultural contributions of Spain and all the Latin American countries that have made our state and County what they are today."
Miami-Dade County kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month by going pink
Chairwoman Sosa welcomed members of the American Cancer Society to speak at today's Board of County Commissioner's meeting regarding Breast Cancer Awareness Month and kicked off a month long series of events to raise awareness. “Hope and awareness are the greatest weapons we have in the fight against breast cancer, which affects so many women every year,” said Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa. “As a breast cancer survivor, I am committed to supporting the County’s ongoing efforts to promote early detection and prevention and to lend a hand to organizations that are championing this cause, because we can make a difference.”

Legislation
Miami-Dade County is taking aim against a heinous new trend in dog fighting.
County Commissioners gave final approval to an ordinance sponsored by Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa to impose tougher penalties against “trunking” --- the practice of locking two dogs in a car trunk and driving around with music blasting while the dogs fight to death in the confined space. “The only thing we can do as a County is increase the civil penalty, but I will be getting together with our state legislative delegation to do whatever it takes to get the criminal penalties increased, because we need to stop this practice once and for all,” Chairwoman Sosa said
Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa calls for streamlining Miami-Dade's permitting process
The resolution, sponsored by Commission Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa, directs Mayor Carlos Gimenez to prepare a plan within 90 days to streamline the permitting process for everyone from large developers to people looking to open mom-and-pop shops or make improvements to their homes. "New businesses create jobs and improve the County's overall economy, so we need to do everything we can to streamline the permitting process to encourage entrepreneurship," Chairwoman Sosa said. "We don't want people to give up on their dreams of becoming a business owner because of inconsistent information from inspectors resulting in delays and frustration, as has happened in the past. A more customer-friendly process will also improve public perception while providing constituents with excellent service."
Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa urges motorists to obey Florida's new ban on texting while driving
Starting next month, Florida’s roads should become safer thanks to a new state law that Miami-Dade County Commission Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa has been championing since 2008. On Oct. 1, Florida’s ban on texting while driving went into effect. Violators now face penalties of $30 plus court costs for a first offense and $60 for a second offense. “I’m thrilled that Florida will be joining the 40 other states that prohibit the dangerous distraction of texting while driving,” Chairwoman Sosa said. “I urge motorists to obey the new law, because one second of distraction behind the wheel can spell the difference between life and death.”
